Teacher brings new ways of learning in classroom through flexible seating
For the next eight weeks, we are Paying it Forward for Education. Hill-Kelly Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram has teamed up with WEAR to give $500 to a teacher with an idea that will help her students.
Lori Patrick became a teacher at Hobbs Middle School just four years ago because she's passionate about children with special needs.
"They're children that get overlooked, they need someone who can spend time with them and work with them," said Patrick.
She has a classroom at Hobbs Middle School full of squirmy, high-energy preteens.
She said, "The students have to get rid of nervous energy, kick their legs, swing their legs, bounce. The desks are hard and uncomfortable after sitting here all day."
Studies have shown that flexible seating does wonders in education. It lets them get that energy out so they can focus on the lessons.
Patrick wanted every child in her classroom to have a flexible seating option. Thanks to Hill-Kelly Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram she was able to make that happen.
She bought bouncy balls and wobble chairs
"There are wobble stools, allows them free range of movement," she explained.
The kids love it.
Lori smiled as she said, "They are laughing more, enjoying the chairs, bouncing and reading on them. "
