Andrews Institute wants to add a Regenerative Medicine Research Lab

Updated: Tuesday, September 17 2013, 07:31 PM CDT
GULF BREEZE   --  The Andrews Institute wants to expand by building a regenerative medicine research lab on the second floor of its main facility.

The City of Gulf Breeze is being asked to pitch in $350,000 dollars from its Community Redevelopment Agency fund, to help pay part of the construction cost.

The Andrews Institute is well known across the country especially in the world of sports medicine.
Now the facility wants to expand with a stem cell research lab that can put Andrews and Northwest Florida on the international stage.

The hospital now wants to develop a regenerative medicine research lab, a first of its kind in the country.

"Gulf Breeze would not be the same city today without the Andrews Institute" said Kevin Cook, Coastal Paddle Company.

Kevin Cook Owns Coastal Paddle Company in Gulf Breeze. He believes Andrews has provided the area many growth opportunities, and feels $350,000 dollars is a worthwhile investment for the city to help with construction cost of the research lab.

"Getting to meet the doctors who are coming in here to shop who live here, work here, play here along with all of their staff and all the patients that they see" said Cook.

The regenerative lab would cost about $400,000 dollars to build, and bring in more jobs.  The lab would use adult stem cell therapy to help patients regenerate damaged tissues faster.

"We don't have a real good solution to manage a lot of cartilage damage and things that occur for later in life… this enables us to have a better option for that and solution to those patients" said Chad Gilliland, Andrews Institute Chief Operating Officer.

Stem cell therapy has to be FDA approved, and a new research lab would help with the approval process.
Chad Gilliland, chief operating officer of Andrews Institute says, the long term benefits of a regenerative research lab, are expected to be felt throughout the community and local residents tend to agree.

"Investing in the institute will just bring more growth to the community in a positive way" said Jessica Johnson, Gulf Breeze resident.

The Gulf Breeze City Council will address the proposal from the Andrews Institute once it is added to the agenda of an upcoming council meeting
