HEALTH: Free Health Screenings

Updated: Tuesday, April 8 2014, 11:12 PM CDT

Free health screenings are available through April at local churches and senior citizens thanks to the Sacred Heart Hospital's Mission in Motion team.

Registered Nurses measure blood pressure, blood sugar, total cholesterol levels and check for anemia.

The screenings are helpful in diagnosing problems that put people at high risk for heart attack, stroke, diabetes and other health problems.

At the end of the month, the Mission in Motion volunteers will also be checking for Osteoporosis.

Coordinator Teresa Jansen says patients get immediate test results -- and she follows up with them if they need help or medical advice.

Jansen says the free screenings are some folks only access to regular medical care.

"We're seeing more people and we're seeing some people who have lost their health care and who are coming to us for their screening so that they have an idea of where they're at and then they go to the doctor," said Teresa Jansen from Sacred Heart Hospital.

You can get a free heart health screening tomorrow from 9 am to 11:30 at Saint Matthew's Missionary Baptist Church in Cantonment.
