It is a common problem that leads to back pain but the good news is it may heal on  it's own.

How to fix a herniated disc.
It's estimated 8 out of 10 of us will have back pain at some point in our lives.  One common cause according to Doctor Michael Sharts is what's called a herniated disc:
Dr. Michael Sharts/ Spine Specialist The disc is padding in between the bones or the veterbral bodies in the spine,

As Doctor Sharts showed us on this spine model, the disc has rings of cartilage, with a soft nucleus in the middle ..
And as we age that ring of cartilage can dry out and crack,, and some of that soft nucleus as it comes out and people can get back and leg pain from that herniated disc.

He says imaging studies can help you determine if that is the cause of your pain and the good news is about 80 % of people that have a herniated disc heal themselves.

In the others we can do a small minimally invasive surgery to remove the compression of the nerve.

What he wants all of us to know however is that there are things you can do while your spine is in good shape to keep it that way he calls it sort of a spine fitness program.

He says it involves maintaining a healthy weight so you don't over-stress the spine.
Asking a trainer to design a program that can help you build up the core muscles that support the spine.

And doing yoga or another activity that stretches the area around the spine.

Experts say it's important to get a proper diagnosis, and find out if you do have a disc problem because they can re-occur, even after surgical decompression.
