HEALTH NEWS: HPV vaccination

Updated: Tuesday, February 11 2014, 07:18 PM CST
A vaccine against cancer exists and you can get it for your kids, both boys and girls.

But, it takes three shots.
Fewer doses can help but may not be fully effective.
The HPV shot a vaccine against cancer but also one that requires three shots, months apart.  In short, a crucially important injection but for many, an inconvenient one.

But today, new research out of Sweden showing that even young women who got fewer than the recommended three doses still had a lower rate of genital warts caused by human papillomavirus.

While this may not tell us whether fewer than three shots is as effective against cancer it points to something encouraging:  Even partial protection is better than nothing.

Fortunately, about a third of young women are already following CDC guidelines getting vaccinated with all three doses.  And it's now recommended for boys as well - effective against growing rates of oral cancers.

But this study suggests that every shot of the HPV vaccine brings some benefits.
