A lot of people have had to wade through standing water to get into their homes or clean up damage.

We talked with Podiatrist Dr. Grace Torres-Hodges, who says she saw an increase in foot problems after Hurricanes Ivan and Dennis.

She says, a lot of the risk comes from a bacteria or virus getting in through a cut or open wound.
Trouble signs to watch for include areas that are red, swollen, painful or hot to the touch.

Nausea, chills, fever and vomiting can also indicate a spreading infection.
Dr. Grace Torres-Hodges: "It's something we should be pretty cautious about. I don't want people to get worried about it but ultimately you want to make sure just keep everything clean and separate, separate the clothing that got in contact with it, wash your shoes and wash your feet."

The doctor says if you don't have running water, you can use hand sanitizer on your feet and legs.
She also recommends washing your shoes or using disinfectant and try to let them dry out between wearings.
