Local family pushes for legalized marijuana for daughter

Updated: Tuesday, January 14 2014, 08:16 PM CST
A local family says their daughter needs medical marijuana and they are pushing for Florida to legalize it.

The Moseley family even traveled to Colorado to learn more about a special strain that could help their child, and how that state went about legalizing medical marijuana.

Channel  3's Amber Southard skyped with the family today and one of the creators of "Charlottes Web" about how the possible legalization ...

"The Moseley's 10 year old daughter Rayanne has several hundred seizures a week...Watching their little girl suffer has the family saying enough! And they are pushing Florida law makers to open their minds."

Charlottes Web is a strain of medical marijuana, high in CBD, an ingredient that controls seizers and has very little THC which is what creates a high when the plant is ingested.

Oil is extracted from the plant and can be used on food.
It's named after Charlotte Figi - a little girl in Colorado who suffered several hundred seizures a week.

Joel Stanley "We're seeing a response of about 85% seizure reduction on average. We have many like Charlotte her case is actually almost 100% seizure free she went from 200 to 400 a week now she has about three a month."

Joel Stanley and his five other brothers created the miracle plant and say now over 300 people use the oil for epilepsy including 180 pediatric epilepsy patients..

Joel and his brothers are helping the Moseley family push for the legalization in Florida.

"I'm confident that the next general election we'll see more then half the states... I think it's coming and in many states it looks like their keen to allow something similar to Charlottes Web even if they won't allow medical marijuana as a whole yet."

Holley Moseley "We need it now and so it pushes us even farther to make this happen."
The Moseleys have hired lobbyists and make trips to Tallahassee themselves to meet with law makers.

And have also started a nonprofit called "Caring for Florida".
Holley Moseley "Our non-profit will grow with the process you know the number one step now is to get it legal and then  it will go from there to helping families."

The Moseley's also visited Colorado learn about legalization in that state.
During the trip,  the Stanley brothers helped educate the couple on "Charlottes Web."

The couple says they now have a better understanding of the medical marijuana dispensaries and even have suggestions on how Florida can improve their bill... By having  tougher testing regulations in place..

Peyton Moseley "You don't know what chemicals while processing through it, you don't know what percentage CBD is to THC, so it's  a lot more involved then people think."

"If signed into law Charlottes Web could be legal in Florida as soon as July."
