Car Seat Safety Check saves infants life

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 01:54 PM CDT
PENSACOLA   --  Earlier this monthly, WEAR teamed up with the Pensacola Fire Department, Cordova Mall and 102.7 WXBM for a child Car Seat Safety Check.

One Pensacola family says that event saved their newborn's life.
Picture this: You were in a terrible car accident and you have a baby on board the back seat...

You're gonna wish they were sitting in one of these and installed properly
For three-month-old Audrey, it made all the difference in the world.
She's safe and sound, laughing with mom and dad today.

Christina Vickery
"It's a God thing, I 100 % believe it's a God thing."
Take a look at their car.
The front passenger side, smashed in a tell-all of how bad the car on car collision was.

Andrew Vickery
It was frightening, just scared, worried about Audrey and mom over here
Christina Vickery,
I remember looking down on her to check on her. she didn't cry, she didn't scream, she kinda just looked at me like what happened

 Andrew Vickery
It scares me to death to think what could've happened,  had the car seat not been installed properly.

Until two days before the accident, the car seat wasn't that secure.
But Andrew Vickery stopped by the Child Car Seat Safety Check.

That's when a firefighter showed him and many other parents the proper way to install a child car seat.

 Andrew Vickery
I actually had the anchors in the wrong spots on the car, they were further apart than they should've been. so he put them in the correct slots, the correct hook in the seats, and that immediately made it a lot tighter

It was basically like bolted down to the seat by the time he was done with it
Andrew waited more than an hour to get his daughter's child car seat checked but he and his wife both agree it was time well spent.

Andrew Vickery
The fireman asked me, when he was done, he asked me, was this worth your time? And I said, oh yeah, definitely

For more information on how to properly install one of those car seats in your car, contact your local fire department. We'll also have more information on our website, weartv.com
