HEALTHWATCH: Type II Diabetes

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 01:54 PM CDT
Type II Diabetes is rampant in our country.  8.3 % of the children and adults in the US have the disease.

One local doctor says since the condition parallels obesity rates -- he expects the numbers to rise even higher.

Cynthia Thornhill is a Type II Diabetic.  She found that out three years ago after a period of, in her words, "feeling strange."
(("I was mad because I didn't want anything else to be wrong with my body."))

Thornhill already has rheumatoid arthritis.
Endocrinologist Ziad  Mamish is Thornhill's doctor and her boss.

Thornhill had worked for a physician who specializes in treating diabetes for more than a year before she realized she had the disease herself...

Mamish says that's why it's called the "silent killer."
(("By the time they're diagnosed more than 75 % of diabetics at the time of diagnosis, they already have a complication."))

Like nerve, eye, kidney or heart disease.
Thankfully  Thornhill had none of those.  What she did have was family history.  At least ten relatives are also diabetic.

(("I didn't know it ran in my family until I was diagnosed.  Nobody ever talked about it."))
Thornhill attacked her diabetes.  She saw a nutritionist,  exercised regularly, read labels, and kept a daily food journal.

Basic, tough, but effective steps.
She lost 20 pounds and today her diabetes in under control through non insulin medication and lifestyle choices.

(("She has changed her diet habits completely."))
Mamish says he thinks fast food is the number one reason US diabetic rates are skyrocketing.

(("Fat is cheap, it's available and it tastes good."))
Mamish says in his twenty years as a diabetic specialist, he's seen the average age of his Type II patient shrink.  Recently he treated an eight year old struggling with the disease.

(("One hundred pounds above her ideal body weight who had Type II diabetes.  25 years ago that was unheard of."))

Mamish says patients like Thornhill inspire him.  She's done everything he prescribed.  And it's working.

(("I'm very proud of her.  I think she is doing better and will continue to do well."))
