When disaster strikes, most of us head in the opposite direction. "They" go wherever trouble falls.

They leave their families and the comfort and security of their own homes to meet the needs of strangers. When help can't wait, the call to serve is answered by the Angels in Our Midst.
Gloria Wiggins,  American Red Cross Volunteer: "Since Hurricane Andrew and I was affected at that time in Louisiana. We went for help and the lines were so long and they needed help so bad until I just walked to the door and I said, Do y'all need any help?  And they said, Yes, and from that day on, I've been a Red Cross Volunteer."

That was August, 1992.  Now, Gloria Wiggins has joined the team of 850 American Red Cross volunteers serving the four counties of Northwest Florida. They support an organization that has a paid staff of only five people.

Jerry Kindle, American Red Cross of NW FL, CEO: "Frankly, Sue, we just couldn't do it without volunteers."

They respond to residential fires, forest fires, floods, hurricanes, providing food, helping people replace necessities, running evacuation shelters, doing casework. When disaster strikes, when help can't wait, they are on the move any place.

Gloria: "I've also traveled to many areas and so many states; the ice storm, the Kentucky ice storm, I was there for that.  In Alabama for the tornadoes.  I was in Louisiana for Katrina.  I was here for Ivan."

any time...

Jerry: "They just don't happen during the day. They all happen at night, two o'clock in the morning."

American Red Cross volunteers are a selfless group. They are dealing with people sometimes at the one of the lowest points in their lives.  Some are afraid, some are angry, some, just lost.

Gloria: "You feel what they feel and, you know, you understand because you've been there."

Jerry: "They're people in the community that care. Some of them retired, some of them work, some of them take off from work; just a cross section, very diverse ffom the community and they all have one thing in common, they want to make a difference and help."

Gloria: "If you have that time to just lend a hand or an ear, it works."

Gloria: "You see the need. And I like to see relief on people's faces."
