Angels in our Midst (Cool Co-Workers)

When you're going through the tough times,  is when you really find out who your friends are.
For one sacred heart hospital employee, her co-workers are friends who became the angels in her midst.

Shana Watley, Medical Laboratory Scientist;  "I work primarily in the Flow Cytometry and also in hematology."

Shana Watley is a medical laboratory scientist at Sacred Heart Hospital.  She works closely with the pathologists and oncologists who treat cancer patients.  Ironically, she would become one of them.

Shana Watley, Medical Laboratory Scientist;  "It's infiltrating ductal carcinoma, grade 3, which is aggressive.  And it's also triple negative which is also a rare form of breast cancer."

Ken Smith, Medical Technologist;  "We didn't expect it.  She had no history in her family of breast cancer.  She's a young woman.
It was a very traumatic and unsetting day."

Michael Krause, Phlebotomy Technician;  "You really never think it can hit home."

Shana accepted her fate with grace.  To face the aggressive and debilitating treatments, she shaved her head.

Shana;  "When I did mine that weekend, he showed up Monday morning, all of it, completely shaved."

"He", is her co-worker and good friend, ken smith.

Ken Smith;  "It was just important for me to show her that we were going to be there for her in a way that she could see everyday."

Steve Bingham, Medical Technologist ;  "I said, you know, I think this is the last straw.  It's time for me to make some sort of statement.  I walked into the barber shop in the afternoon after work that day and said, Make it chrome."

It was an ultimate show of support from guys who are more than co-workers; more than friends ...

Michael Krause, Phlebotomy Technician;  "To help her understand, you're not alone in this fight.  We are family.  We're here with you through thick and thin."

The clean cut family quickly grew to include Louis Savoie, Donovan Titus and Troy Lewis.
Shana;  "They are amazing and I'm not going ... I'm not gonna cry...."

Actually, they think Shana is the one who's pretty amazing.

Ken;  "Shana literally left today to go get a treatment for her own breast cancer and came back to work here. It's an amazing story of someone who has a very severe breast cancer who continues to work to help save the lives of other people here."

Shana;  "There are so many other people out there that are suffering from worse tragedies and diseases.
To get the support that I have, it's extremely humbling."
