Dana Walker, Foster Parent;  Love babies, love kids; just love doing the mothering part of it.
As mine got older, they were like, Mom, I don't need you to hold my hand anymore.

Dana Walker and her husband, Jeff, found that there were lots of children who did need to have their hands held, like little Mr. T here.  They became foster parents to reach out to them; the children who come with the scars from being abused, neglected or abandoned.  They all find the same thing here.

Structure and love; love being unconditional; whether they're raging one moment or in tears the next.

But, once they're in here and you love 'em a little bit, they take to you pretty quickly.

And the Walkers take to them pretty quickly too.  In fact, that is what most foster parents find to be the hardest part of the job.

Giving them up.  You get attached quickly.  It's a happy and a sad occasion when they're leaving.  You're sad they're leaving but you're happy that they get to go back to their mom and dad.  And that mom and dad are a better parent since they've gone through their steps that they needed to do.

They find the rewards far outweigh any challenges.  There is no price tag you can put on the difference you can make in a child's life.

Seeing the little smiles in the morning.  Knowing that they are safe for the time that we have them; two weeks or two years.

The commitment the Walkers have made this past year to the children left in their care has been a life altering experience for them too.

It does change your world especially when you get a call, you're getting a child in two hours.
We got one at two o'clock in the morning.

During our visit, the phone rings a caseworker with another child in crisis.
All right.  Thank you.  Uh huh.  Bye, bye.

And one more time, Dana will open her doors and her heart to another child who needs a safe place for a while and unconditional love.

Angels in our Midst is brought to you by Sacred Heart Children's Hospital.
