Angels in our Midst (Day of Caring)

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 01:43 PM CDT
ESCAMBIA COUNTY  -  This past Friday, more than 1,000 of your co-workers, neighbors and friends left the comfort of their office and familiar jobs to go out into the community.

They spent the day doing good around the community; they spent a Day of Caring.

All across the county ...
The sounds of progress ...
The spirit of community ...

AT1 Curt Metzger, USN Blue Angels;  We're building a quilt frame for a quilt that was donated by some children.

Metzger;  We're also building a toy bin here using some 3-D Ronald McDonald characters that they've had in storage.

While the Blue Angels team is outside building storage units at Ronald McDonald House   Volunteers from Specialty Center are preparing their own goods for storage.

Marcia Steele, Specialty Center Director of Nursing;  We've got some bell peppers and onions going; that's what smells so good.  On the menu today is Shepherd's pie.  And we also have some white chicken chili going and we have some chicken spaghetti going.  Makes you hungry.

This is a big day for Fran and Newman Gersin and the Leaning Post Ranch.  This is where they run therapeutic programs for troubled youth and children with disabilities.

Newman Gersin, Leaning Post Ranch;  It means about ten years worth of work that I would have to do on my own is getting done today.  So, I'm thrilled.

It's Gulf Power crews who are getting the job done here.  This turns out to be the perfect volunteer site for many on the team.

Johnny Bryant, Gulf Power Company;  I was born and raised in the country and I had an old barn like this.  This one is supposed to be over a hundred years old and I want to preserve it.  I think it's neat.

Every project would have an impact.  Some were meeting critical needs like the potential lifesaver for Vaughn Knight.

Rory Cassady;  He's paralyzed from the waist down and has a wood house and a tree line that abuts his house.

Vaughn  Knight; Disabled homeowner;  It was, maybe about, ten feet from the house.  And that's too close ... in the event of a fire.

My bedroom is on that end.  The first thing that would happen would be that side of the house burn.

Before the day was one, more than 100 projects would be completed, countless lives would be touched all because the army of 1,000 gave of their time.

LS2 Andrew Schwartzer, USN Blue Angels;  Actually, today would be our day off for those who are staying at home. But we saw the opportunity to come out and, you know, helping hands.

Deryn Baggett, Gulf Power Company;  It's a chance to give back to the community; do something different, something to help out.  Good day to be out of the office too.  It's beautiful.

And they gave of themselves..
Fran Gersin, Leaning Post Ranch;  Oh, Sue, you know we couldn't do it without our community and we've got the most giving community in the world.  And thank you so much.

Angels in our Midst is brought to you by Sacred Heart Children's Hospital.
