Angels in our Midst (John Mihalicki)

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 01:43 PM CDT
When John Mihalick's wife, a teacher, passed away nine years ago, his children encouraged him to stay busy.

So, he went back to school, 1st grade, volunteering in his grandchildren's classroom.

Eight years later, they're gone but he's still there, making a difference.

Harper;  "He's funny.  He's funny."
Johnathan Morrell, 7 years old;  "He's very nice."

Tom;  "When I came out once, he spoke Spanish."

There are a lot of things that make John Mihalicki special to the children at Cordova Park Elementary.  He's the man who helps lay their foundation for learning.

Mia;  "Reading, math."
John;  "Today, everything is about videos.  I want them to read the books in the library because authors paint pictures with words.  And I want them to understand that their imagination is the key to the future for them."

The Retired Mechanical Engineer has a way with numbers, too.
Johnathan Morrell, Gets Help From Mr. Mihalick;  "He helps me do my math.

He makes me understand it."
He is any teacher's dream; those extra hands...

Tom Remington, 6 years old;  "If we have a test that we missed and we were absent, he makes us fill that in."

And a caring heart.
John;  "One on one.  Sometimes it's maybe only five minutes, six minutes but what you find out is they all also like the attention.  It's one on one."

Mihalick says this is the time that touches his soul.  And it's the time when he feels he really reaches the children.

John;  "That somebody who has no vested interest as a parent or grandparent or anything else can actually be interested in them."

Mr. Michalick has no trouble summing up what he hopes he has given these children at end of the day.

John;  "I hope they can look back and say, That was fun today.
And if there's one that's not had a good day. was I, in some way, able to make that day a little better for them."

The children find it easier to express their thoughts in pictures.  Their friend brings so much to their lives, they struggle to find just the right words.

Harper Wiggins, 7 years old;  "There's a lot of things about him so I don't ... there's a lot."
