PENSACOLA - The Escambia County Animal Shelter is usually running over with animals. There isn't money for extra amenities for them, but these best friends are getting a little help from their friends, the angels in our midst.

Christa Pettijohn / Looks out for the animals; I think it was bred into me. Both of my parents are die hard animal lovers. Growing up, we always had rescued animals in our home.

Their stories are pretty much the same. The members of the Junior Humane Society have a lifelong love for the animals.

Laura Catterton / Rescues animals; I've rescued many injured dogs and cats, donkeys, camels, horses... So, it's an ongoing love for animals, to help them, that God's instilled in me.

It is that shared compassion that has set them on their latest mission; to get special beds donated for the animals at the Escambia County Animal Shelter.

Christa; Kuranda beds, they can be easily sterilized and they're very easy to clean. And they're very sturdy so they're reusable. You can use them over and over again.

The Kuranda beds are preferred over blankets and towels which get wet and can harbor bacteria and infections.

Mike Bowen / Dog Trainer; They're happier when they're there. And these beds are nice; they're elevated so it keeps them off the ground. Air will flow through and keep them cooler.

Laura Catterton / Rescues animals; We just see so many neglected, starved, and injured, lonely dogs ...

We're asking the community to help us help the animals here to lessen their suffering and to lessen their stress level.

They hope that means more adoptable dogs and fewer of them having to be put down.

Laura; Our goal is to get every dog that we can, adopted into a good loving home.

The Kuranda beds are ordered on line at a site designated just for Escambia County donations. The beds are shipped directly to the shelter in the donor's name. The beds come in three sizes and range in price from 48 to 56 dollars.

Christa; I would love to see us have at least one hundreds beds donated. That way, every kennel at the shelter would have a bed. Every animal would have a bed.

Angels in our Midst is brought to you by Sacred Heart Children's Hospital.
