Angels in our Midst (Junior League)

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 01:43 PM CDT
PENSACOLA  -  The Junior League of Pensacola was formed in 1956 with a goal to make the community a better place.

The organization has changed over the years and after research and surveys, the ladies have found their niche.

They've become Angels to the most vulnerable among us.
Andrea Tippett, Pensacola Junior League President;  This is not your mamma's Junior League.  We have changed a lot..

But we are still a group of women who are committed to volunteerism meeting those unmet needs.  And right now, the need that we're focusing on is Foster Care children.

And they're meeting a very basic need for these children, they're buying pajamas.

There are more than 3,000 children in Foster Care in the 4 Northwest Florida counties.  Merrie Schwartz is an adoptive parent and a medical foster mom for 30 years.

Merrie Schwartz, Foster and adoptive mom;  They call you at 5:30 at night and say we're bringing some children in that need an emergency placement and can you take them and they get here 8 or 9 o'clock at night and they have nothing.

That's why the Junior League stepped in.
Andrea;  Because they have no parents; which is sad.

Terri;  I think they recognize that these are babies and these are children that need someone to say, You know what, I want to stand up and say, I want to make the difference.

The League hosts special outings for the children and they place special emphasis on the older ones.

Andrea;  We have done a drive for the Boys Base program for those boys who are at risk.  Getting them professional clothes so they can learn job interviewing skills.

The ladies have designed a program for older girls who are aging out of the system all alone.

Andrea;  They lack the parents that you and I would ask, How do I balance a checkbook; How do I show up for an interview, What do I need to know.

Terri;  It is absolutely amazing what they have done and words cannot adequately express how grateful we are for the Junior League.

Andrea;  This is where we found we could have the most community impact and that's what we're all about.

Merrie;  It's really important because none of these children come by appointment.  Nobody plans to be in foster care; nobody plans to come and stay at my house.  It just happens.
