Angels in our Midst (Vaughn Nichols)

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 01:43 PM CDT
Vaughn  Nichols, A Science Guy;  "Science is all around us.  I grew up in the country basically in a little small rural town in Alabama.  And my dad owned a little small service station business so I had to work with my hands and I learned a lot about fixing things and working on stuff."

What Gulf Power Engineer Vaughn Nichols is working on these days is fixing and changing young lives.  He spends his days, nights, weekends volunteering with students; opening their eyes and minds beyond what they can see.

Vaughn;  "I love seeing things come to pass.  That's what an engineer is; we're problem solvers."

One problem today is keeping students interested in learning and pushing the new frontier into science, technology, engineering, math and medicine.  For Vaughn, it's another problem solved...  He simply makes it touchable, tastable, relatable; fun.

Vaughn;  "That's the way the learn the best.
And when you can make learning exciting and have activities for them, they're going to remember that."

A typical engineer, Vaughn is always looking to the future and in every student he says the potential for the next great invention or medical cure.  It's a point he hammers home to them throughout his session.  You have the potential ...

Xavier Johnson, "It keeps you motivated.  It just keeps you motivated to never stop learning."
Vaughn; "And that's what I'm trying to get them to do; reach out, find those little gifts they have been given, that all of us are opening up through a lifetime, so they can open it up and share it with the rest of us."

As well as taking his "I love science" program to various schools, Vaughn also runs the district best robotics competition each year; sending teams to the regionals and national.  He spearheaded the futuristic electrathon competition.  Creative minds built the next generation of cars and put them to the test.

Vaughn;  "The more we learn, the more we find out we don't know.  And these kids have a wonderful future in research and development or in just solving problems.  We all have problems.  Life is not without problems; don't worry about that."

Alaysha Lovelace;  5th grader;  "A good teacher.  On a one out of ten, he would be a ten."
Vaughn Nichols gets a ten-plus rating from every young person he's touched; whether coaching soccer or baseball, as scoutmaster, or as a one-on-one take stock mentor.

Vaughn;  "It is my goal to give back as much as I can.  Whether it's in baseball or basketball or helping kids, just to help them find their gifts and make out community a better place."
