DOC investigating inmate abuse at Dade Correctional Institute

Updated: Thursday, July 10 2014, 10:44 PM CDT
An inmate death at Dade Correctional in South Florida was just the beginning in a string of apparent corrupt acts in the department.

The death of a prison inmate two years ago has sparked outrage throughout the state and is forcing the department of corrections to finally take action.

In June of 2012, mentally ill inmate Darren Rainey was burned to death in a scalding hot shower as an alleged punishment from officers.

The American Civil Liberties Union is calling for a federal probe into the uninvestigated situation.

"We need the Department of Justice, the United States Department of Justice, to come to Florida to hold the department of corrections accountable and hold some of the guards responsible for the killing of inmates," said Howard Simon.

DOC Secretary Michael Crews announced Thursday that the Warden for Dade Correctional Institution has been suspended for two years and has been placed on paid administrative leave.DOC investigating inmate abuse at Dade Correctional Institute
