A new warning now to parents about what's called "Secondary Drowning"
More than double the number of cases in Florida this year compared to last

Secondary Drowning
Susan Saulny reports from the Washington, DC bureau

It's a summertime hazard few parents know about, but that awareness is growing. It's called "secondary drowning," and it can occur after a near-drowning incident.

Your child may look fine after being rescued, but he or she may still be drowning on the INSIDE!

Today the Consumer Product Safety Commission will announce today that secondary drowning in Florida has more than doubled in January-May of this year compared to last year.

The terrifying phenomenon happens when water is trapped in the lungs and builds up as a physiological response after a near drowning. The water reduces the body's ability to take in oxygen, which can ultimately lead to death.
