3 counties collaborate to capture sunglasses thief
WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WEAR) —
A 49-year-old man is facing burglary, grand theft and dealing in stolen property charges after authorities say he stole sunglasses from his former employer.
According to the Walton County Sheriff's Office, someone stole 57 pair of Maui Jim sunglasses worth $14,000 from Aly's Beach back in May.
Authorities say the burglary happened several days after Michael Zorn, who worked for the store through a day labor service, stopped showing up for work. Around that time he was also featured on Bay County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page as a burglary suspect.
Days after the burglary, authorities say Zorn sold seven pair of the sunglasses to a Pensacola pawn shop for $11 a pair, totalling $77. Authorities say that was a fraction of the retail value of $1,800.
Both Walton and Bay County investigators got warrants for Zorn's arrest on June 3. He was believed to be in Milton living with relatives, so the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office got involved to serve an arrest warrant.
When Santa Rosa authorities served the warrant at the home where Zorn was staying, he ran out the back door but was quickly caught with no issues.
Zorn was taken to the Santa Rosa County Jail and is being held on warrants out of Walton and Bay County.
