6th grader arrested for bringing loaded gun to school
CANTONMENT, Fla. (WEAR) —
A Ransom Middle School student has been arrested for bringing a loaded handgun to school. The child was taken into custody very quickly, officials say.
Tuesday morning, a school resource officer (SRO) located the firearm on the child as students exited their school bus, according to Escambia County Sheriff's Office (ECSO) spokesperson Maj. Andrew Hobbs.
The sheriff's office said the SRO made contact with the student after they got off the bus due to an ongoing investigation. During the discussion with the student, the SRO was able to determine the student had a firearm on them.
The student was arrested and taken to a Department of Juvenile Justice facility in Pensacola, Hobbs said. They have been charged with possession of a concealed weapon, brandishing a firearm or destructive device on schools grounds, and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.
Hobbs added that the school, located at 1000 W Kingsfield Road in Cantonment, was not placed on lockdown.
Channel 3 News reached out to Norm Ross, Deputy Superintendent for the Escambia County School District. He said he cannot comment on a personnel decision concerning a student and declined to give details.
At this time, it is not known whether or not the child intended to use the gun. No one was hurt during the incident.
