Death penalty denied for accused killer

A Santa Rosa County man charged with two counts of first degree murder will not face the death penalty.

Investigators say in 2014 Derrick Thompson killed Steven and Debra Zachowski of Milton. He then murdered Allen Johnson in Bay County within a week.

The state Supreme Court recently required the legislature to clarify Florida's death penalty laws.

Last week Thompson asked the court to strike capital punishment in his case. That motion was granted Thursday.

The maximum sentence he could face is life in prison. His trial is expected to start in February.
