Fatal shooting victim identified, gunman on the run
PENSACOLA, Fla. (WEAR) —
Escambia County Sheriff's deputies are searching for a gunman involved in a fatal shooting Wednesday night.
The victim of the fatal shooting has been identified as 19-year-old Jaquan Berry. Berry was found on the side of the road on Trenton Drive near Edison Drive.
Neighbors say crime is not uncommon in the area.
Kathy Nelson lives just feet away from where Berry was found Wednesday night.
"I heard gunshots," said Nelson. "Bang, bang, bang!"
Found with multiple gunshot wounds, the Berry was pronounced dead at the scene just after 10 p.m.
"We jumped up and got on the porch and saw the boy's body laying out there by the road," said Nelson.
"I heard somebody screaming, 'That's my brother laying there'. So it's very upsetting," said neighbor Patricia Lockhart.
Lockhart lives across from where the shooting happened, but not for long. She said she is now looking for a new place to live.
"Police are always patrolling this area," said Lockhart. "You see stuff going on, so you know something is probably going down."
The sheriff's office tells Channel 3 News evidence recovered from the scene could suggest the shooting is drug-related. Something Shaunta Jarrett doesn't find hard to believe.
"I just wish they'd find their way back to just being kids and learn how to be young adults," said Jarrett. "It doesn't take a gun to get your point across."
Nelson said this is not the first time she has heard gunshots in the area, but nothing like this has happened in the 20 years she has lived here.
"I feel sorry for the parents, I'm praying for them," said Nelson. "It's sad; every time I think about it, I want to cry about it."
As of right now, no arrests have been made and there are no suspects in the case. If you know anything, call Crime Stoppers at (850) 433-STOP.
