Florida Highway Patrol sergeant struck and killed in I-75 crash
Sergeant William Bishop of the Florida Highway Patrol lost his life Saturday while working a vehicle crash on Interstate 75 in Alachua County.
The FHP says a 2010 Chevy Malibu was involved in a crash of some sort before 6:30 p.m. Saturday, so the 22-year-old driver parked southbound in the emergency lane.
Bishop, 52, pulled up in his patrol car shortly thereafter and got out of his vehicle to tend to the Malibu in the emergency lane.
That's when a secondary two-vehicle collision spilled into the lane Bishop was standing in and hit him, according to the FHP.
Bishop, a resident of Lake City, Florida, was transported to Shands Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
