Man shot and killed at gas station in Gulf Shores
GULF SHORES, Ala. (WEAR) —
Gulf Shores police are investigating a deadly gas station shooting. It happened at the Clarke-Exxon station located the 3600 block of Gulf Shores Parkway around 8 a.m. Monday.
Police say they arrested the suspect, 26-year-old Daphnne resident Albert Laquentin Smiley, near Cobb Theatre after he called police and turned himself in.
According to GSPD, Smiley fired more than one shot from a shotgun. The 31-year-old victim's identity will be released after his family is notified.
"The shooter left the scene and drove approximately one mile north, he parked up here at a local motel and actually he himself called police and said 'This is where I'm located' and surendered to the very first police he encountered," said Police Department spokesperson, Sgt. Jason Woodfuff.
There were also several witnesses who watch the event unfold. One followed the shooter after he took off.
"It was quite a few people around, there were witnesses there at the gas station and I know at least one witness followed the shooter away from here. That witness updated us on the shooter's location prior to. We were kinda going to that area when the suspect called and it was just the same info," Sgt. Woodruff said.
Authorities believe the shooter and victim exchanged words before the shooting took place. Smiley will be charged with murder. He is currently being held at the Gulf Shores Police Department awaiting transport to the Baldwin County Jail.
