Niceville husband accused of critically injuring wife, disabled son with metal mallet
OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WEAR) —
A Niceville-area woman and her disabled son are fighting for their lives after reportedly being attacked by a family member.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office has charged 76-year-old Judson "Butch" Wood with two counts of attempted murder.
Investigators said Wood attacked his wife and disabled son while they both slept in their beds.
The sheriff's office said the two were struck multiple times in the head with a metal mallet around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, which was found on a nightstand next to where deputies found the wife.
Wood reportedly told investigators his own health is declining and he had been thinking about "putting James [Wood's son] out of misery."
The sheriff's office said Wood claimed his son's need for continuous care was becoming too difficult and he didn't think anyone else would provide him what he needed.
Wood also claimed his wife was becoming hard to handle, the sheriff's office said.
The two victims are currently in critical condition at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.
Physicians said the wife will need extensive facial reconstruction.
A mugshot of Wood is not yet available.
