Oil Spill: Has the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico changed your opinion on expanding drilling in the Gulf?

34.2% Yes
65.79% No

Comment: First you have to ask for an opinion to ask this question. Mine, lets stop drilling everywhere in the Gulf. Then watch the crying towels come out at the gas pumps. Then the "Florida Lawmakers" will be rethinking if they want to say "paper or plastic" at the checkout line @ Walmart. This issue is nothing new and there are risk associated with everything in life. You cant have a "chicken little mentality" from Pensacola,Fl by Flower

Comment: I didn't agree with drilling to start with, we really need to consider the earth and how everyone can put back to find a different way to harvest or produce what we need. I don't have the answer but we are seeing the effects of how everyone has raked the earth and how it is changing or should I say dying. by Laurie

Comment: I never wanted drilling off the Gulf Coast and this is a perfect example of why! You can never predict situations like the one that happened last week but now look how many people and businesses could potentially be impacted by the expanding oil slick not to mention the impact on the environment!!! from Pensacola Fl by Wendy

Comment: No it has not changed my opinion because I have always been against drilling in the gulf. Drilling in the water where most of the land surrounding is US soil has always been a bad idea because any spill means disaster of monumental proportion that would be far out weigh saving a few pennies on a gallon of gas. from Summerdale Alabama by Jayne

Comment: The governors of the 4 to 5 states affected by the inevitable beach impact, and resulting devastating environmental, and economic ramifications, need to band together and ask for federal assistance. We have huge air and naval bases who could marshsll resources to keep this huge and increasing oil leak contained offshore. Without this assistance which is ready and waiting, we are looking at disaster to jobs, families, tourism, home values, and to the environment. We will not recover from coastal impact for years, and we could, I repeat could take action now to ask for assistance that would be glad to help at the federal level. Did we learn nothing from katrina? by mary

Comment: Since I do not plan to stop driving or using electricy find oil not from the Middle East, seems important. from Navarre, FL by Leroy

Comment: Natural gas wells are ok but crude is a no-no close to our beaches.Natural gas is plentiful & underutilized by most communities.WHY are we forced to pay for barge delivered low sulphur coal from South Africa for Gulf Powers Crist boilers when gas would do a better cleaner job??? from pace

Comment: Drill. We should have drilled 20 years ago. We need all the oil that is not from other countries as we can get. Yes, we should follow other options but for now, DRILL. from Pensacola, Fl. by Franklin

Comment: so, how long has it been since ,the last oil spill, by bill

Comment: no more than airplane's crashing. would they close all airports, from which the plane took off from. NO !! we need to drill for our own oil. or get it from Alaska. we need to get hold of our independence. from pensacola,fl. by geralynn

Comment: no, it hasn't changed my mind because I was worried about an oil spill like this happening and my husband and I are firmly against oil drilling in the Gulf. from pensacola by georgia

Comment: No I still think drilling in the Gulf of Mexico is a good thing. We drive cars and there are major accidents, but it don't change individuals minds about driving. I believe this is the first major accident in the Gulf in years. I think we should drill in the Gulf and put Floridians to work. from Mary Esther, FL by Alan

Comment: Oil independence has a cost but one that I feel is worth the risk. We need to break our dependence on the middle eastern oil. This accident will only fuel the anti- drilling groups. from Gulf Breeze by Ramsey

Comment: I think the deep water drilling is far too dangerous to our beaches, fish, crabs, etc. This demonstrates that they can't prevent spills, and can't stop them when they occur at such depths. They have ruined Texas and La. Don't let them ruin Florida. from GULF BREEZE, FL by GORDON

Comment: We need to depend on our own resources for energy. This was an accident and just that. Powered sea vessels put more oil into the environment than the oil rigs/platforms. If an airplane were to crash coming to Pensacola, would we want the airport closed down? Don't think so.... from navarre/florida by glen

Comment: It would destroy Escambia County's Cash Cow!! from Maryville, TN by Bob

Comment: i believe this was no accedent, that is my thinking. i worked in the offshore oil field for 20 somthing years now retired , this could have been done on purpas hired by some group to do this. this is just my thinking but may be wrong. from holt Fl. by dean

Comment: I hold to my view that we shouldn't drill in the gulf...It is pretty peculiar how Obama says he's gonna open up the gulf and the next thing you know we have a rig blow up with casulties and an oil slick headed our way...It's just not right but there has been alot of bad stuff happening since you all voted him into office from Navarre, Fl. by Marci

Comment: No way...start the drills now.. The more the better.. everytime a drill or rig is built it will be better than the old ones...Maybe someday people will relize we need more rigs in the gulf, along with some refinery in florida or Mississippi. from niceville fl by robert

Comment: Texas has a tar-like mud at their beaches. Not for the Emerald Coast beach lovers! Renewable and bioenergy is the way of the future. from seminole al by scott

Comment: I thought it was a bad idea before and I hope this wakes people up to the threat to our beaches. from Destin, FL by Mike

Comment: I was against it before and I still am. It was just a matter of time before there would be an accident, not to mention all of the legal routine daily pollution. from Gulf Breeze/FL by Enid

Comment: Accidents happen just like the mining accidents in West Virginia. Florida needs decent paying jobs and not just tourism. from PNS, FL by Erick

Comment: Florida struggles to balance the budget every year in a tourist driven economy. Sales tax collections, tourist development taxes and real estate sales depends on visitors to the state and yet wea re willing to risk it all for an oil company to make profits. Florida needs to dance with the one that brought them and stop aligning themselves with big oil. We have had this debate for the last 35 years. First it was California, then Alaska, then the Mississippi river, Florida will be next unless Charlie Crist takes a stand for Florida. from Pepsicola by Scott

Comment: I never thought expanding drilling was a good idea. The recent tragedy has only reinforced my position. If alternative energy received the kind of government and taxpayer support that big oil receives it would reduce the likelyhood of these disasters. Look at the taxpayer dollars spent by the Coast Guard in search, rescue and oil abatement and then consider the tax relief that will bve granted to BP Oil and others because of the expense they will inicur in attempting to deal with this disaster (after realizing one of the greatest quaterly profits ever) and one can only realize that there is something wrong with our priorities. With this one spill alone, any financial gains realized by coastal states stands to be totally erased. Lack of foresight, vision and wisdom seems to be continuing to carry the day. from Elberta, AL by dBob

Comment: I could not believe Obama changed his mind about drilling in the Gulf. I thought it was to good to be true. Now they will say he mis-spoke. (Lied) by Michelle

Comment: Drill baby drill!!

Comment: this has re-enforced my standing opinion on not drilling off the coast of florida. so...where are all those folks who supports the drilling and all their oil industry based "science" that says the modern equiptment will never allow for these sort of things to happen? well...it did happen! can you imagine if the rig was withinh sight of the coast? this area would the same as alaske when the valdez spilled their oil...over ten times worse...again, the "drill baby drill" crowd got it wrong again...i just wonder how many others things they are wrong about? from p'cola fl by h

Comment: It will be 20 years before the U.S. reaps the benefits of domestic oil. Have you reaped benefits from the previous 20 years? NO. No matter how much is drilled, prices are going to climb, politicians are going to use it to finance and further their election interests, etc, (ex. Charlie Crist) and at a $1500/sec profit, oil companies can afford to lower cost dramatically. We have the technology to move away from oil. Remember how fast the auto industry spit out hybrids when the price of oil shot up? That didn't happen overnight. They've had that technology for years. It's all about politics. from Pensacola, FL by Cheryl

Comment: In the early 60'2 Kennedy said we could have a man on the moon by the end of the decade. Why can't someone step up to the plate and say we will be off fossil fuel in the next twenty years? from Cantonment by Randy

Comment: The residents of Florida have very little to gain from off-shore oil drilling, but much to lose. The health of out tourism industry, local businesses, the environment, as well as our overall quality of life are at stake. This current oil spill is a peek at what the entire Gulf Coast has to look forward to, if we allow expansion of off-shore oil drilling. We have far too much to lose. Tell your legislators, "No more drilling." from Gulf Breeze, Florida by Jeff

Comment: My opinion remains the same. As long as the flow of huge amounts of money between oil companies and elected officials continue, a "little" environmental collateral damage will not change the way they do business. Recall that we were told that the risk of an oil spill in the Gulf was very low given today’s prevention technology…….and the source of this information came from those who know best, the oil companies. from Pensacola, FL by Tom

Comment: The need for expansion of drilling activities must be due to an ever increasing demand for the oil. If mankind continues to increase it's demand for the oil, then it must come from somewhere. It appears that people want the oil, but not the process for producing it (NIMBY). My suggestions: 1. Perform RCFA on the current accident, and apply new measures in order to continue with expansion of drilling. 2. Pursue the Pickens plan which makes perfect sense to begin replacing oil with natural gas, which the US has plenty of. This will require politicians to back away from the oil lobbyists' payouts to support the middle east oil supply. from Seminole, AL by Keith

Comment: It's Obama's fault for letting them drill. by Marsha

Comment: i am not for drilling at all, i don't get it, they say theres not much oil in the gulf, but some lawmakers push for it anyway. i wonder where they will be working when public life is over? BP? from pensacola fl by robert

Comment: No, my opinion hasn't changed. 'Crap happens'! It was and is inevitable (in ANY venture)that mistakes are going to be made. This mistake/accident although tragic is the price to be paid for 'our' glutinous behave toward the use of oil/oil based products. While we are at it, should the USA stop mining? Last month we had a tragic mine accident, but yet they still have the unsafe mines open and people go in them 24/7 for work. They are both the same, we lost people, but life goes on. from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom

Comment: if it can happen to one oil rig it can happen to them all another eason why obama has no idea what hes doing from navarre/florida by rex

Comment: Yes I was always for offshore drillin but the problems this can cause is just way to much.I fit cost Just a few more dollars to save our beaches than I say No Drilling from Allentown/Florida by Glen

Comment: please do not drill for any more oil look what has happened this pass week with the spill what a mess an we do or did have beautiful beaches we'll see what happens. Also you already know they aren't prepared to clean it up. from pensacola, fl by joan

Comment: I am a proud wife of a Offshore Oil Rig employee and think expanding in the Gulf should still be considered. This is a isolated, horrible thing that has effected all of us. The families of these workers have had the reality thrown in our face on the dangers our loved ones go through. With that said we have sooo many other horrific situations that go on more so than a oil spill. Think about the families that lost their husband, father, son and brother. Lets work together and stop all the bashing. Unless you are willing to give up all your comforts that oil plays a big role in making and I am not talking about the transportation getting it to your favorite store. from Florida by Danah

Comment: It hasen't changed my opinion because we need to keep finding and refining this product. People are worring about the beaches. If we run out of gas, its a mute issue, as no one but the local will be at the beach. It runs our country and the world. Just imagune what it would be like if all the gas stations closed tomorrow. Technology is not here yet to replace the cars, trucks, trains land planes to transport the worlds population. Horse and buggy days surely would'nt work. from pensacola, fl by jim

Comment: We must continue to move forward to make the drilling happen. Why should we depend on foreign countries to supply us with oil when we have all we need in our own country? I think this so called accident was intentional. The Obama administration will stop at nothing. KEEP MOVING FORWARD WITH DRILLING. IT HAS BEEN OVER 30 YEARS SINCE AN ACCIDENT. INTERESTING HOW THIS CAME ABOUT JUST WHEN WE ARE ASKED TO VOTE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH DRILLING. from milton by jp

Comment: The oil spill is a unfortunate event. People need to realize that if we do drill off the florida coast that it will not effect us because there is no oil. Its just natural Gas. Its called the destin dome, one of the world's largest natural gas dome. People here in the Gulf Coast need to get their facts straight before judging something that they are unaware of. Drilling off the coast of Florida will be very benefical! from Pensacola/FL by Julian

Comment: Those politicians in Tallahasee should send those oil lobbiests packing if they expexct to keep their jobs. from milton fl by dale

Comment: never believed it was a good idea to start with for just this reason now how does it effect our wildlife and how can we pertect the sea animals from pensacola fl by mary

Comment: Always knew it was too risky to drill in the gulf. Good thing it happened where it did and not closer to our beaches. from Navarre, Fl. by C J

Comment: its sad that something like this has to happen to make people wake up. Maybe this will stregnthin the fight against offshore drilling in florida from pensacola by cody

Comment: Hopefully everyone will now push to stop off shore drilling. The oil that is out there would only last the US for about 10 years. It is not worth the cost of what is happening to one of the greatest tourist attractions in the World. I am also upset about being told that the JT8 was cleanned up at the Barrs bridge. It came down the IWC yesterday evening covering everything from the bridge east to WCI Condos. A call to the coast guard went to a deaf ear. from Pensacola, FL by Jim

Comment: What worries me more than the oil spill is the Escambia County Copmmissioners( at least Dist 1 2 4 & 5)getting involved with the situation. They don't know about sealed bids so what makes them think that all of a sudden they can become environmentalists? If they will stay away from the Gulf I feel confident that the Coast Guard will handle the situation with the spill and BP Oil without the commissioners. As for offshore drilling I'd rather have that than the pollution Gulf POower puts in our air every day. Lou from pensacola fl by lucius

Comment: its the risk of oil drilling. no different then on land. the tree huggers love their suvs! from pns, fl by md

Comment: Maybe the 4-20 celebration got a little out of hand out there on the horizon and they blew the thing up. Go green! from Pensacola Fl. by Tony

Comment: Don't drill in Gulf. There should be something in place to stop a leak from continuing to poor into the water. Shut of from Pensacola, FL by Michael

Comment: Over a year ago President Obama said that our nation wasn’t Christian anymore. Since then we have had many earthquakes, floods, tornados, a bad oil spill, and even a volcano. The U.S. Government, (Federal Judges) are doing everything in their power to stop religion and prayer. No wonder all these things are happening and I don’t think we have seen the worst . God Bless America, and I will pray anytime and anywhere I want to. It's time we all pray. Marie from Pensacola by Marie

Comment: we vacation at gulf shores every year and plan tobe there in may...I hope from evansville,in by mike

Comment: I was always against expanding oil drilling since the 80's!! How many accidents have to happen before we wise up? from Pensacola by Douglas

Comment: Even though there is an occasional airplane accident, most of us continue to fly when we need to. Drill Baby, drill! from Ft. Walton Beach FL by Roger

Comment: I've always been against drilling offshore for this very reason. Everyone in favor of "drill baby drill" hope you got what you wanted. Enjoy the summer with no tourists.

Comment: A means of capping off all off shore oil platforms in an emergency must be established. from Pensacola, FL. by Tom

Comment: No - I was against it before and I'm against it now. I visiting your great state in May; I was planning on swimming at Pensacola Beach... from Minneapolis, MN by CeCe

Comment: No it hasn't changed my mind, I didn't want it to happen in the first place. I moved here from up North due to the beautiful pristine beaches, and nature preservations and to enjoy the outdoors. It is a travesty that this is happening. from Milton by Deb

Comment: I have always been opposed to offshore drilling, so my opinion remains the same, and THIS is why! from Pace, FL by Marsha

Comment: I have been against additional drilling on our coast. We endanger the lives of the workers (we never hear of the daily accidents that happen), our sea life is in danger, our beaches could be ruined. Let's face it, our State depends on snowbirds for the winter tourist industry, Spring Break and vacationers until fall. We should have enough rigs out in the water already. We do not need to damage our environment on purpose. from Ft Walton Beach, FL by Mildred

Comment: This would be the biggest mistake Fl would ever make. Our beachs will look like La,Ms and Tx if we would to go ahead with this. I think our beachs and wild life mean more to us then to lose our tourest and beauty. from Ft Walton Bch by Luan

Comment: Part of doing business and if we want to drive this is part of the deal to drive. $10.00 a gallon gas will so this down so what from Milton FL by Bob

Comment: I think that we need to spend more time & MONEY on renewable energy. from Milton,Fl by Fancis

Comment: Common knowledge states that diffusion of ANYTHING in a liquid can be detrimental. Drilling in any body of water is ludicrous! I understand that our politicians and oil company's are greedy, self centered people/organizations, however it would've been nice if they had stepped outside of their boxes and took a moment to think of what would happen IF an oil leak in the ocean did occur and who or what it impact! Only man poses the worst threat upon every other organism on this planet. Way to go BP! Stop drilling in the oceans! from Pensacola, FL by Samantha

Comment: WEAR TV3 God Bless everyone helping with the oil spill. Things will probably slow down soon because Washington D.C. is sending swat teams, environmental people sniffing the wind to see if its ok to set the oil on fire, war ships, bird watching groups, and all spewing propaganda to the news media bragging about what a wonderful job they are doing . They will slow everything down trying to out do one another. from Pensacola by Cheryl

Comment: Any time there's an accidental oil leak or spill this could affect our daily livelihoods in northwest Florida.oil rigs in the gulf, i will forever repel the idea. .This is just another form of pollution in my eyes. If the government didn't have such an interest in oil sales, they might actually figure out that there are other forms of energy., like wind for example. and solar for another example. from Fort Walton Beach, Fl by C.

Comment: Let's work on natural gas instead. from navarre, fl by betsy

Comment: I never thought is was a good idea but i knew it would create alot of jobs in the Florida gulf coast. What I would like to know, what can I do to help? from pensacola/fl by David

Comment: While we need energy, why not natural gas? The oil companies make the money. The residents lose, lose, lose. This will cost us big time. from pensacola by nancy

Comment: I have always thought that off shore drilling was dangerous for our coastline. Now I hope those in our state government will agree. The cost of this tragedy will go far beyond enviromental devestation. The tourists will not come to oily beaches. It has been reported that Property management companies and condo owners may be able to ask BP to reimburse the loss of income they will suffer due to vacation cancellations. But what about those of us in the service industries which depend on the tourists staying in those condos? These ramifications may put many out of business. from Navarre, FL by C.

Comment: Thinking the technology was safer I was in favor of drilling but my mind has changed with this disaster. Too much at stake for the oil. We need to learn to live with less dependency on oil. from Crestview, Fl. by G.

Comment: I vacation there every summer and have plans to be in Orange Beach july 3rd and have been following this on your web site. I cant even start to imagine what this is going to do to the beauty and wildlife there. We put a man on the moon, why cant they plug a hole under the surface? There should be safegaurds on top of safegaurds on these oil rigs like they were nuclear power plants! They say their going to drill a relief well, why not drill one when drilling main well. Im very afraid of whats to happen. I come down there to relax and fish and not sure of what the future holds as of right now. from Swifton Arkansas by Robert

Comment: bp british petro that should say enough from ponce de leon fla by william

Comment: Anyone in their right mind would be taken aback by oil hitting our beach, however, until we are energy independant we should do whatever is necessary to minimize imports, esp. from arab countries such as Iran. Heads should roll for not having adequate safeties in place to prevent this spill. from P'cola by Steve

Comment: We need to continue to expand in the Gulf & not depend on oil from other countries. The spill is bad but we will survive it from Sontag Ms by Charles

Comment: Rep. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana should take the $300,000,000 plus Obama bribe money Obama gave her to vote for healthcare and give it to the Shrimpers, and Fishermen of Louisiana for their great loss because of the oil spill. from Mobile/AL by Wanda

Comment: It was a bad idea and it STILL is a bad idea! from Navarre by Rick

Comment: so can something be put into the entrance of our port. To stop the oil from coming into our bays???? thanks,a very concerned citizen, imagoinfishin_1@yahoo.com from Pensacola, fl by Jerimy

Comment: I was against drilling and still am. from pensacola, fl by faye

Comment: Accidents happen everywhere! from Navarre by Kevin

Comment: I DON'T UNNDERSTAND .WHY ARE SO CALLED GREAT GOVERNMENT. CANT STOP.THE OIL.AND CLEAN UP THE REST.YOU WOULD THINK THAT IF WE CAN HELP THE REST OF THE WORLD.THEY COULD HELP ARE SELVES from fort walton beach by robert

Comment: Well I would hope they would be rethinking! I have never been for drilling in the Gulf. from Pensacola by Kathleen

Comment: No, I still think we should drill. The benefits in drilling are huge for our economy and independance from foreign oil suppliers. If we had spills such as this one on a regular basis I would think differently, but I know of only 2 major spills in my lifetime and I am 65years old; for my grandchildren's and their children's independance on foreign oil I am willing to take the chance. from pensacola, fl by a.j.

Comment: What can we do to help our community and shoreline? We are to lose our beautiful beaches, sealife and wildlife. We want to help - how can we help? from Fort Walton Beach FL by Karen

Comment: Ihave hated the idea of drilling in our Gulf by dee

Comment: We need to be rid of Arab oil, no matter what! from Pensacola/FL by Leonard

Comment: I have always felt that we should not be allowing this. With ALL our MODERN technology and THINK TANK EXPERTS...this is the best that we can come up with?! We as Americans need to stop being afraid of change and continue to being lazy in the name of creature comforts! Let's do away with "petrol" and go with cleaner versions fuel that ARE available. We have GOT to stop killing our natural resources before we no longer have "life support" for ourselves! from Cantonment/Fl by Carmel

Comment: I was against more drilling in the gulf before the spill. This spill is no suprise to me. With the hundreds of rigs already in the gulf it was just a matter of time before something catastrophic occured. I'm just heartbroken about our beautiful gulf being so carelessly distroyed by our own greed for more oil. from Pensacola, FL by Donna

Comment: Accidents happen, they always have and always will. If we let this accident stop us from the continued exploration of oil, then we just might as well throw in the towel and tell the rest of the world that we are not as strong a country as we thought we were. We need to stand together and repair the damage then move on in a strong and positive manner. from Pensacola, FL by Steve

Comment: Our primary objective must be to preserve what we can of our local economy, both tourism and fishing, and if there is even a remote chance (and obviously there is) that this type catastrophe could ever occur again, we must not take that chance. from Pensacola, Fl by Terri

Comment: I am waiting for all the data on the recent event before I make up my mind. I am not ruling out Eco-terrorism at this point. I want to see the rig examined and rule eco-terrorist either in or out first. from Milton by Jim

Comment: why dont they use a scumball like they use in swimming pools to soak the oil us in the skimmer or bales cotton thanks from navarre by John

Comment: I have always believed drilling in our waters is a dangerous proposition. Our region depends on our precious natural resources for the livlihood of many. The very sensitive waterways and estuaries are important to the entire Country's ecosystem. Why do we continue to put the interests of oil companies over the health of our citizens and the wildlife and coastal waters and beaches that are the best part of living here. I keep remembering the words of someone who could have assumed one of the highest offices of leadership in our Country: "drill baby drill" and it sickens me that so many still buy into the uninformed words of a political climbing, ultra conservative, short sighted woman and others who ignore the findings of scientists and environmental experts to further their own petty agenda. I'm a proud liberal environmentalist who pledges to speak out louder than ever before. from pensacola, fl by sherrie

Comment: i really hope its stays away from us. I been here my whole life and the only thing fun here i love doing if fishing and if the oil comes here there wont be any good fishing at all and its not really fair to us for messing up our waters for stuff like that im pretty sure they can find oil on land but i hope we can stop it i wish theres a way for me to help it . from pensacola,fl by tony

Comment: They (BP) is taking this to lightly. I think it should be shut down in the gulf. They compair this to a car acedent or the challenger explosion but that didnt affect Millions of People and event more of our wildlife. Its going to distroy everything this area loves, the beach, seafood, fishing, water sports, and the list just goes on. Stop pointing fingers and get-r-done. from Pensacola/FL by Greg

Comment: people use cat litter to get the oil off of their carports and things why can't they dump alot of cat liter in the gulf and spread it around and then just scoop it up. The last time I had cat liter it didn't sink in my bucket and it might not sink in the gulf, its worth a try I think, and I don't think that they should drill so close in they should be out at lease 100 miles that way it would not hit our beaches and they would have time to get it stopped and cleaned up but thats just my opion thanks from Cantonment Fla by Belinda

Comment: sarcastically speaking, i dont see what the big fuss is about? we intentionally spill the same amount of oil everyday in the ocean, this is a fact that everylarge shipping vessel and even the military ships wait till they reach the hundred mile marker to change oil in thier engines and electric generators and bildge pump it into the ocean, another fact is show me one port or dock that has an oil recycling station hooked to it...i hope you print this cause this is why i quit the commercial fishing industry in 2001 and refuse to join the navy like my father did.... thank you if you print this... from pensacola, fla by gary

Comment: Here is my opinion. We don't have a choice. We have to have oil. Why is this only a concern to Americans. So we want to put a disaster in someone else's backyard? I don't. As long as we need oil to put food in our mouths, then drill baby drill. But that being said please don't vote for Palin. We need the oil companies to invest more in safety to ensure it is under control. Or, better yet. Let's get a real great transportation system in pensacola. Subway, trolley, train, double decker buses that go everywhere and there is just no reason to own a car. I would rather us public transportation, but how can we when it is useless. If you start a transportation company you have to invest the money and prove to people it works. People will then follow. And lastly, could WearTV3 try to do a better job on the local news. Start covering more news coverage. Honestly I usually go to WKRG Mobile to look. Thanks. from pensacola by Jerry

Comment: As bad as this oil spill may be, we still need oil to keep our economy running. We should strive to process as much of the fossil fuels that we can while developing other sources of engry (nucular, wind, bio, etc)for the future. from Pensacola/FL by Ray

Comment: Living here on the beautiful gulf coast is amazing. I love the beaches, warm blue waters and white sand. I have spent hours watching the sandpipers, blue herons, pelicans and seagulls. Sometimes i am fortunate to spot a dolphin pod. The idea that harm will come to these beautiful creatures due to human negligence deeply saddens me. NO drilling in the gulf...its just not worth the risk!!! from pensacola/fl by shannon

Comment: No change...this type of event always loomed on the horizon, and any expansion would increase that threat...I always opposed expanding drilling. Not to mention the long time delay before any advantage reached the domestic oil market just makes expansion plain dumb in a state that relies so heavily on tourist $. from new haven/ct by j

Comment: I was NEVER supportive of drilling in Florida waters ... now look what's happening to our Gulf , NOT worth it in my opinion :/ from Pensacola , Florida by Fred

Comment: But that doesn't mean I changed and am NOW opposed to drilling. I have always been opposed to drilling in the Gulf. It is just too risky. from Pensacola, Florida by Dave

Comment: I had uneasy feelings when I heard the President saying he was going forward with drilling but after this I am convinced we must ramp up efforts for alternative fuel. The catastrophic devastation from this will be felt for decades. from Seattle WA by Jess

Comment: I have been 100% against any additional drilling in the Gulf Of Mexico or anywhere as long as I can remember. I had hoped that I was wrong and that there would be no tragedies like this one. Now everyone knows I was correct, that drilling in the Gulf could be a disaster. I am not happy to be right. from Panama City Beach, FL by Viola Ann

Comment: I was never for the expansion of drilling for oil in the Gulf. Obama's plan for setting up these rigs a mere 3 miles from shore is outrageous! from Pensacola FL by Anita

Comment: it was always a bad idea to drill for oil, it hasn't help our gas prices, now we messed up our beaches and killed many wildlife, we need to find out ways, oil is not a friend and its not our answer, it kills people and animals every year from pensacola fl by shirley

Comment: Although we do need to expand our sources for energy, and am in favor, generally, of drilling, I have never been a fan of drilling in the Gulf of Mexico for this exact reason...I have been dreading for many years something like this happening, and now it unfortunately has. It just sickens me to think what may end up happening to our beautiful beaches, and to our marine life, and to our local economy...This is just awful, and I am praying for the best. from Shalimar, Florida by J

Comment: I've never been in favor of drilling in the Gulf, and my opinion hasn't changed. from Niceville / FL by Vikki

Comment: You know I hate to say this or think this, but if all else fails and our beautiful beach's all of Florida, the Everglades, coral reefs and all the wild life. to do all we can to save them. God forbid every day more and more oil spewing out by the barrel. Drop a low yield under water atomic bomb down at the broken pipe and turn that area into glass. I'd rather see 50 miles in inhabitable than millions of square miles. think about it if all else fails. Then the blame game. This is war here and how can we win mother nature. This is getting ugly.Sorry to all of us who reads this. from Pensacola, Fl. by Darren

Comment: Drilling in the Gulf is a short sighted and obviously disastrous attempt at a solution to our energy needs. When are we going to stop believing the lies that the oil industry have been telling us about the safety of offshore drilling. The cleanup costs for this are going to be huge but still only a small percentage of BP's profits and if Exxon Valdez is an example, it still won't be done right. I'd much rather pay 8 dollars a gallon and have clean beaches and a healthy environment than have the disaster that is confronting us. from Gulf Breeze, FL by Mike

Comment: No more drilling in the Gulf. They have done to much damage to the ecosystem. They should have commited the resources needed for the 'worst case scenario' when the accident first happened and we would be 10 days closer to having this problem cleared. Instead they tried their cheapest and most cost effiecient alternatives first at the expense of our coastlines and wildlife. The government let hem go on to long on their own. They should have stepped in immediately. These are our nations coastal waters. They affect our nation's habits. They should not have sat idly by for 10 days for BP to fix this. NO MORE DRILLING. from Navarre, Florida by Maryann

Comment: We may as well drill here in Florida because it happens to us when they drill in Louisianna and they profit from the drilling... so why not drill here? from gulf breeze by deann

Comment: I fill we she keep our resources in the US and if that means drilling in the Gulf then lets do it. We should also pray that God will protect our beaches from the oil spill. from pensacola by tina

Comment: I have only changed my convictions. Drill on land, it is easier to clean up spilled milk on a table than is the sink. You can drain a sink you cannot drain the gulf. With that said, we drill where the oil is and where we are allowed to drill. When gas goes up to 8 bucks a gallon, left and right will start screaming drill baby drill on land. I have seen wind mills and they are pretty. I pulled up next to this windmill and there was no gas. I walked home. Wake up America, we need oil and lots of it as we convert to natural gas and alternative fuels. However, our military equipment will always need gas. Windmills need oil too. Plastics, lubrication and the factories that make them. We are so stupid. We drill in the gulf because we are not allowed to drill in National Parks and areas of Executive Orders that forbid it. How sad, we have to drill in the sink and not the coffee table. We ask for it and we got it. Nevertheless, BP did not take on the additional cost for safety. I say stop all drilling and pumping. Let gas go to 8 bucks a gallon and trust me, we will find oil in the strangest of places. Just might be on land in those high electoral states and congressional voting districts. from gulf breeze florida by danny

Comment: I've always been against expanding drilling in the gulf. Look at the texas coast compared to 40 years ago.Texas beaches were like those of NW Florida then. Now they are all browns. The lawmakers are in the oil companies pockets. It's all about the dollar anyway. If we are going to have more fuel efficient cars in the future we will not need more fuel so we will not need more oil production. Another note on gas sales: The local Citgo's are owned by Chavez from Venezuela. Buying gas from Citgo only supports his socialistic dictatorship. He laughs all the way to the bank because he gets a nice income from us "stupid americans" from cantonment by planet

Comment: No, because they should never drill here in the first place. The first thing the people of this are should do is vote Jeff Miller out of office, this guy is a complete idiot. Listen to his comment on you Saturday night news, all he could talk about was how this might effect military training in the gulf. He is totally clueless. from pensacola beach by bzr

Comment: Just recently moved from Niceville to Tampa Bay. I have never supported offshore drilling expansion. It only takes one accident to destroy everything, and if this isn't contained soon this will harm the entire Gulf Coast. Money can't buy everything, and now we may be about to lose it all. from Seffner, FL by Kristina

Comment: I've always had grave concerns about drilling in the gulf. This terrible incident has only reinforced by doubts about drilling in the gulf. Years ago, we had a condo at the western end of Fort Morgan Road. We could see many rigs when standing on the beach. Walking on the beach, we would find globs of a black sticky substance; it was called "beach tar." We knew it was from the drilling operations just off shore. It was sad to me then, but it is a tragedy to all of us now! from Orange Beach, AL by J.

Comment: we all drive cars we are all to blame...no demand no supply..stop pointing fingers..oil might be the only thing we have left in this area from milton florida by joe

Comment: I never supported drilling in the Gulf.I think trying to drill for oil over here makes sense but having it right near our beautiful home is ridiculous. We are called the Emerald Coast.Thats what the panhandle is known for. This was a careless mistake. It should have been more under control. I am so angry about this oil.It doesn't matter whose fault it is though cause in the end we all need to come together to save our beautiful home. from fort walton beach, fl by Rachel

Comment: No, I still think we need to be able to drill in the gulf, however, there needs to be a plan of action IN PLACE in case something like this happens. BP, from what I have been reading, was NOT prepared for this. We need to have ALL bases covered before we drill. from Crestview, FL by Tara

Comment: we need to stop drilling in the gulf and tap all the oil opn land that is restricted at this time. land drilling safer and there is lots of oil and we need all saftey measures in place so this will not happen again heartbreaking devastation about to occur and lets get it capped now blos it up whatever it takes to stop as much dammage as possible

Comment: I was 100% opposed before - now I am 1000% OPPOSED TO DRILLING. Why is BP still calling the shots - apparently they don't know what they are doing. from gulf breeze FL by elizaabeth

Comment: never believed in drilling in the Gulf to begin with!!!! Now maybe people will know why! Pity it takes a crisis like this to convience people that drilling for oil does nothing more than feed the greed! from Pensacola, FL by Kim

Comment: We all knew this could happen and we were told that there was no way it would ever happen. We were also told that the oil companies use so many safety measures. Until they use every safety measure needed to insure that this never happens again then NO MORE DRILLING SHOULD BE DONE! The rigs in place now should be halted until the proper safety devices are installed. from PENSACOLA, FL by Bill

Comment: I was all for oil rigs in the gulf before this happened. I say that the environment is way more important than money. from Mobile, AL by Scott

Comment: The oil spill, earthquakes, floods in the north east, volcano are nothing compared to what is coming. We have a disaster and people pray and forget about it in a week or two. The anti-christ came to the Gulf of Mexico today. A year ago he said that the U.S. is not religious anymore. He is right and that's our problem. Our government is turning against Jews and we are turning away from God. What's happening today? Read Matthew 24, verse 5-12. from Gulf Breeze by Lisa

Comment: We need to keep drilling but oil companies need to be more responsible with toughter guide lines to deal with oil spills. from Milton by Paul

Comment: I just read an article on the Valdez Spill in 1989. The residents in Alaska say there is still oil on the beaches 21 years later and the beaches smell like a gas station. I do not think people are aware that the effects of that spill are still being felt. The Valdez spill consisted of 10.8 million gallons. We have already exceeded that and the well is still spilling oil. The emerald coast will never be the same and that is unbearable to imagine. from Pensacola FL by Tracy

Comment: I grew up vacationing on the Gulf and still take my kids there several times a year. I worry that for the next several years we will not be going to the beach. My 4 month old daughter will not learn to swim in the Gulf as her older sister did. Why? Because of reckless greed. I opposed offshore drilling expansion b/c something like this is statistically inevitable. Well, the "chance" that this would occur has come sooner and more seriously than anyone would dare dream. Too little foresight came much too late. from Valdosta, GA by Kelly

Comment: I moved here from Mustang Island off Texas coast to get away from the oily water and icky beaches. This WILL come in, maybe not right away but the first hurricane will bring in whatever globs have already sunk. Drilling offshore of Florida would be a HUGE mistake! But once the estuaries and beaches are ruined, no one will care anymore and they'll drill!! So very sad to ruin God's beautiful creation this way. from Pensacola, FL by JRoAnne

Comment: I never wanted the drilling to occur in thr first place. After the Exxon Valdez incident...are you kidding ?Did anone learn anything from that ??? What will life be like here now ? How many fishing seasons and animals lost , and clean up workers sick and dying ???SAY NO to offshore drilling and find a clean energy source ...this is 2010 and I know this country is quite capable of making better greener choices! from Milton,Florida by jodean

Comment: I still support domestic offshore drilling. Oil will cross the Gulf in tankers on the way to refineries along the Gulf Coast at a rate of 5 million barrels a a day. This imported oil comes from some folks who don't like us very much, Hugo Chavez in Venezula and from Saudi Arabia. Some of the money we pay for this imported oil goes to fund terrorists who want to kill us. While this spill is terrible I think after they figure out why the BOP's failed we should continue to drill in the Gulf of Mexico. As ugly as it is to see a dead sea turtle i would prefer to view that than one of our soldiers who has been killed fighting in the Mideast defending foreign oil fields. from Gulf Breeze by Terry

Comment: We need to look at other energy sources and find out why it was NOT mandatory for these rigs to have automatic shutoff valves installed like serveral other countries do. Was it a cost saving feature for BP not to have a shutoff valve installed when the rig was installed? Now the cleanup may cost them alot more. from Pensacola, Florida by Irene

Comment: Words cannot describe the grief I am feeling for the destruction of my home. It will never be the same in my lifetime. This shows that anywhere in the gulf is too close, and we cannot depend on big corporations to care enough to do be responsible. They have proven that. We were naive. Now we and our wildlife and treasured natural resources are the cost. from Pensacola, FL by Dara

Comment: It actually hasn't changed my views, I have always been against it. Sure we saved some on less expensive domestic fuel, but at what cost now. This could be an economic catastrophe bigger than Ivan and Dennis combined and recovery could take even longer. from Navarre by Amy

Comment: I think they should drill. It makes a good reef for fish. The gov't should put restrictions ob them that world protect this from happening again from pace, fl 32571 by james

Comment: We need to find other oil resourses in America. Not the Gulf or under the water. That or find other sources of fuel. Why haven't they used the same things they did in Alaska to get the oil up? from Pensacola, FL by Jean

Comment: The worst thing we can do is let this crimp our plans to drill for more oil. Beyond that, the psycho green eco nuts will now want to prevent further drilling and limit what already exists. Are any of those same eco nuts going to continue to fight wars for oil? That is pretty much the main idea for our involvement in the Middle East. When the eco nuts start enlisting and going to hellholes like Astan and Iraq, I will jump on board their platform. Until then, they can do multiple tours like I have done in the last eight years. from Milton, Fl by Aaron

Comment: I am so happy to know that there has not been any other news to report since this oil spill. Our crime has stopped, no accident, channel 5 has more news and the oil spill is closer to them!!!!!!!!! from Pensacola, Fl by Shirley

Comment: I feel, as do many others I have talked with, that plans and preparations for this type of disastrous oil spill should have been in place BEFORE drilling was allowed. Profit CANNOT be placed before safety. We must not allow oil drilling to jeopardize our marine life, our tourist industry, our fishing industry. The big oil companies MUST BE REQUIRED to have safety procedures and plans in anticipation of future spills. The time to experiment is not after the fact! There is no excuse for this mess. from Pensacola Beach, FL by Margaret

Comment: I do not approve of the expansion of oil exploration in the Gulf. Our beaches are beautiful! The most beautiful in the WORLD! Drill Baby Drill should not be an option! By the way BP Gas Stations have nothing to do with this crisis. The people that work at these stations are our neighbors, friends and family. They are not responsible for this crisis. I will continue to support my neighborhood BP store. The store was amazing during Ivan and Dennis. It is a family store and our community loves them. Scenic Hwy BP will not be boycotted!!! from Pensacola FL by Courtney

Comment: We need more than ever to drill, but in an environmentally safe way. If they close down all the gulf drilling, along with passing Cap and Trade and the VAT tax, we'll see gas at $10 a gallon, which would make the economy come to a screaching hault. from Gulf Breeze, Fl by K.

Comment: No....lets face it..we all drive and thers oil in the gulf. You don't stop driving your car because a loved one is killed in a car crash and we shouldn't stop oil exploration plans because of this horrible accendent. Comment: The goverment should never allowed drilling in such deep waters. Our politicians do not live here and they do not have any idea what this does to our beaches. No,I'm against drilling in the Gulf of Mexico or anywhere close to any coast. from Navarre by Christine

Comment: i think that this accident will prove to be an example of a worst case senario for all offshore drilling on america's coastlines. it just goes to show that our addiction to oil is becoming a hazard to the environment and our way of life along the coastlines. from Pensacola/fl by Cal

Comment: Why can't we see the video from the remote robots? from Cantonment, Fl. by John

Comment: No, we need to access and use the variety of energy sources available. Yes, we need to expand (significantly)sources beyond oil - natural gas, nuclear, wind, solar, etc. - but in the next 10-20 years, the U.S. is very dependent on oil - and I am not willing to put our life in the hands of crazies in other parts of the world. What we need to do is enhance the safety mechanisms for all drilling, especially offshore. And we should not drill within 25 miles of the Florida coast. The redundant mechanisms on the Transocean rig did not do the job - so they must be examined in depth and another redundancy needs to be added. It's easy for those who do not work in a complex business to issue fiats about what should be. It's another thing to design, develop, and implement fail-safe systems. Life is about choices. We've made the choice to adopt and use technology to enhance our living standards. Along with that, we have the responsibility to do it with respect to each other and the environment. from Pensacola / Fl by Rick

Comment: No, I did not want it before and I especially don't want it now. I grew up in Louisiana near the gulf and my father gave 30 years to Texaco (went out of Venice for many years). He was the picture of health until at age 68 years of age he died from stomach cancer. I know it was the pollutants from the oil industry that did it to him. So, drilling should be way out there...NOT in our beautiful gulf! from FL by Anne

Comment: Most folks seem to compare this to the Exion Valdez, a ship moving oil from a land based well to the refinery. I have learned some facts that startle me. Primarily that the US does not have regulations in place requiring the latest and best accident prevention tools. Until those regulations are in place we should stop drilling. Only until the regulations are in place. BP has proven that we can not trust Multi Nationals (or for that matter any company) to do the right thing on their own. We have to have regulations and punishments in place that make it cheaper to comply. from Pensacola, FL by Henry

Comment: i think what they should do is make a connector pipe to put between the two broken ones....might not fix but will slow it it down then they can use that big 4 story building thing to catch the rest from milton FL by kurtis

Comment: There never should have been off shore drilling to begin with. It all has to do with greed. We have the technology to not use oil anymore, big oil business and government corruption are why we still use it. Greed is what it is all about but when are beaches are ruined forever and the animals are all dead then what? from Maitland, FL by John

Comment: This is a mis-leading question. Do you want to know if it changed people's minds, or if they do or do not want it? I have not changed my mind, as I never wanted it in the first place. Public Transportation would help fix our dependency on oil. Drilling is too close to our shores. Saves them money, kills us. Benzine CAUSES LEUKEMIA. There is not enough money in the world to save us all from that. Yankees win again. from OS\MS by L

Comment: I lived in Pensacola the first 31 years of my life before moving to Utah. We visit Pensacola Beach as tourist now every year and we now realize we left paradise. That said we need to be independant of foreign oil and accidents like the Deepwater Horizon are not the norm and I still wonder why there was such a violent explosion big enough to sink a drill rig of this size. from Sandy, Ut. by Ed

Comment: My opinion has NOT changed, we NEED to drill for the oil to be free from dependency on foreign oil, unfortunately these things happen, and due to faulty equipment, we have the leaking oil. We need to be better prepared to deal with this type of situation with newer technologies and NOT 1960's methods... from Pensacola, Florida by David

Comment: I think that with technology being what it is today, it should never have happened. If they can put a man on the moon in 1969 and bring him home, I know that this could have been prevented. What is worse though, is interrupting programing that I pay for, so that politicians can run their mouths and never say anything. from Milton, Fl by Barry
