Teen Sentences: Do you believe it is cruel and unusual punishment to sentence a teen to life in prison without parole?

37.5% Yes
62.5% No

Comment: Rape is another kind of murder that should be punished with the death sentence. If they get life, they got a break. from Cantonment/Florida by Tom

Comment: I think if the punishment fits the crime or the criminal then life without parole is in the publics best interest. That is the goal of sending criminals to prison afterall....Keeping the public safe! I don't care how old they are if they commit a violent or multiple crimes they deserve to spend life in prison without ever getting the chance of re-entering society. Their rights, comfort or happiness mean absolutely nothing to me! Protect those of us that abide by the law at every age and stop worrying about what the criminals are suffering through. They did the crime now let them do the time!!!! from Pensacola, Fl by Wendy

Comment: Yes. except for a life taking crime Kids are not fully capable of understanding the crime and the punishment associated with the crime. and prison are no adequete for juvenile offender nor do they offer the ability to help these kids from Orange Beach, Al by Douglas

Comment: Only to Tax payers. Long live the death penalty. from Gulf Breeze by James

Comment: It really depends on the cause and effect of the crimes. Teens now have a "get out of jail free" card. If you dont want to pay, dont play. from Pensacola, Fl. by Franklin

Comment: It appears that now when someone does a crime that we do not want to hold him or her accountable. This is one of the reasons youth crime is on the rise throughout the country. from Pensacola/Florida by Terry

Comment: It is absolutely cruel and unusual punishment. Everyone knows that we all did more stupid reckless stuff as teenagers. EVEN if I'm murdered by a teen, I don't want them put away for life. from cantonment, fl by al

Comment: Unless a teen commits murder, or some other crime that changes or ends someones life COMPLETELY, they should not lose their freedom and their life. Punishment though should be in order from Baker, Fl by Dillon

Comment: i think if you do what i takes ,you should get what's deserve.so i think they deserved it if they did it. from pensacola,fl by taraallen

Comment: Most teens know the difference between right and wrong. If the crime involves rape or murder or if the teen is a habitual criminal then he/she should spend their life behind bars and lose their rights. We give these kids way to many rights now and this is part of the problem. Do the crime, do the time! from Pensacola, Florida by Faye

Comment: if they do a crime they should go to prision just like grown men and women the ten commandmns oe says tho shalt not murder. if you take a life yours has to be taken too. it isn't right to put men and women in jail or prision and feed them for the rest of there life. in crestiew florida long time ago tey would hangeople on the courthouse lawn for doing crimes. ifthey did that today would not have so much crimes or murders today. from crestview florida by deborah

Comment: i think it all depends on what the child did. if it had any thing to do with murder or rape then yes; but if the child robbed someone then they should go to DJJ. from pensacola, florida by kimi

Comment: I guess them murdering the victem is " not cruel and unusual punishment?" I guess not murdering a victem, but paralyzing them for life is not cruel and unusual punishment? I guess maimed victems that can not even respond to this question today were of no real value? from Pensacola,FL by Flower

Comment: Isn't it cruel and unusual punishment MANDATORILY inflicted on the survivors of the murdered individual? If a youngster (regardless of age) has the presence of mind to realize what he/she has done is immoral as well as illegal, then I don't see a darn thing wrong with it. Let's work harder at modifying the environments of youngsters before we are faced with the question of jail-time for punishment. from Mary Esther, Fl. by Tom

Comment: Their behavior isn't going to change, their parents obviously weren't around to teach them right from wrong. from pensacola by susan

Comment: Unless we are going to allow teens to be executed for the heinous acts that they commit, then life sentences without parole would seem to be the way to go. from Milton, Fl by Aaron

Comment: Generally I agree that life in prison for a teen without parole is a bit much. However, a history of violence or a murder may be beyond this consideration. from Gulf Breeze/FL by Don

Comment: I think they should be held accountable for their actions, but the possibility of parole should be based on each case individually as well as the teen's past prior to his/her imprisonment. from Pensacola, FL by Steve

Comment: That's the problem with society. We have been tought that we don't have to take responcibilty for our actions, and the courts and the government encourage that belief. IF YOU COMMIT THE CRIME YOU DO THE TIME NO MATTER WHAT YOUR AGE IS!!!!!! from PENS/FL by DAVID

Comment: When our local 14 yr old shot his dad in the back after reloading his weapon is a outright murderer. He called 911 and asked if he would be tried as an adult. Yes he was fully aware of what he was doing. Fry him or make certain he will never see freedom again. by Rhonda

Comment: no! this society is too soft on kids...wonder why crime is so high and have no resect for others? here you go! from p'cola fl by h

Comment: We can't hold these kids responsible for crime at this young age. Crime is a result of 400 years of oppression by the white man. These families need more money from the government to raise they kids rite. We payin for wars all over and can't take care of our own opressed peoples. from Pens by Leroy
