Develop A Plan Now:

Shelters DO NOT accept pets. Decide now where you will go in case you need to evacuate. If conditions are not safe for you, then conditions are not safe for your pets. If you do evacuate, take your pets with you.

• Prepare a list of phone numbers of veterinarians and kennels who board animals close to your planned evacuation location. The Web site www.petswelcome.com maintains a list of hotels that accept pets.
• Carriers, collars with proper ID, and leashes should be maintained at all times.
• Gather vet records, medicationsand treats and blankets.
• If boarding your pet reserve a space early with your vet or kennel.

Evacuating With Your Pets:

• Take: a pet carrier, food/water bowls, a one-week supply of food, water in plastic bottles, pet medications and health records, leashes(muzzles, if necessary), and newspapers and paper towels for cleanup.

If You Must Leave your Pet Behind:

• Ensure access to a safe room without windows but with adequate ventilation and elevated spaces or counters.
• A sufficient supply of water is critical. Leave enough food for at least three days.
• Do not leave cats and dogs in the same space even if they have been friends.

After The Storm

Pets are easily lost and confused outdoors after a storm, so keep them indoors or confined. Downed powerlines and high waters endanger animals. Beware of food or water that could be contaminated. If you lose your pet, quickly contact area vets, boarding facilities and local shelters. Take your pet's picture along and check in daily.
