NAVARRE, FL - Every fall, a magical event takes place in the insect world.

Perhaps traveling over your own head right now--or clustered by the hundreds in a nearby tree - the annual Monarch Butterfly Migration to Mexico is underway.

And as Channel Three's Tara Brown shows us....there's no better place to watch the beauty than "The Butterfly House" In Navarre.

Fall is the time of year when elegant beauty surrounds us - as the migration of the monarch takes place.

"It can travel up to 3000 miles, from Canada all the way down to Mexico... so usually around mid October is when the Monarch are actually migrating through our area."

Theresa Friday with the Butterfly House says by instinct alone, monarch butterflies go to the same mountains that their ancestors left the previous spring... And this year the butterfly house will be doing monarch tagging - tracking the beauties as they take flight.

"This is where we'll put a very small paper tag on the butterfly wing and let it go and if that tag is recovered in Mexico we will be able to see on the computer where that butterfly was tagged, where it ended up in and how long and what route the butterfly took."

"Step into the Butterfly House not only will you learn about 20 different species of butterflies you'll also have a chance to learn about the life span of a butterfly."

From cocoons to creepy crawling caterpillars - kids young and the young at heart are educated on the life cycles of a butterfly and how important they are to our habitat.

"Next to bees, butterflies are the most important pollinator and one out of every three bites you take requires an insect to pollinate the food."

So as we enjoy the beauty in the skies remember it starts with us protecting the creepy crawlers on the ground.

The 2nd Annual Butterfly Festival is happening at the Butterfly House In Navarre on October 10, 11 and 12th. Admission is free but donations are appreciated.Coastal Living (Butterfly Migration)
