SANTA ROSA COUNTY - There are almost 2-thousand reports of child abuse in Santa Rosa County a year...And investigators believe many more go unreported.

The Santa Rosa Kids House, which just opened this spring, is trying to put a stop to the abuse.

When a child comes through the doors of the Santa Rosa Kids House, they're walking into a facility built just for them.

Cathy Powers-Sears/Santa Rosa Kids House: "This is how we wrap our arms around the kids, is that giving them a safe place to be, giving them a fun place to be while they're here and try to create the kind of place where they say, 'I don't want to go home, yet. Can we stay for a little while longer?'"

Most of the kids who play with these toys are here to talk about allegations of abuse.

Powers-Sears: "We have all the agencies in house, so the child literally only has to tell their story one time."

There's a child friendly medical room, with a polar bear exam table, to collect physical evidence.

Down the hall, children are interviewed in a room equipped with a camera...So all the agencies involved in the case can listen in and depositions are taped.

Mollye Barrows/Reporting: "Many of the children who come here are removed from their homes with literally only the clothes on their back. This is the donation room. Here, they can find things like clothes, toys, and they're even given backpacks with things that they need like toiletries."

This is also the only advocacy center in the state with an office for the Attorney General's Child Predator Cybercrime Unit.

The center's goal is to heal and prevent child abuse and build stronger cases.

Just this week, investigators here helped nab a local firefighter accused of having a sexual conversation on line with someone he thought was a minor.

Powers-Sears: "We just need to let people know that there's a safe place for them to come and that we're here for them."

The Santa Rosa Kids House is a non profit agency that relies soley on grants and donations.

They're now looking for volunteers to greet people when they walk in and help around the offices.Santa Rosa Kids House
