PENSACOLA, FL - Once widely considered a board where the incumbents stayed as long as they liked... The Pensacola City Council is in the midst of a major shakeup.

4 out of 9 council members are brand new... And for the first time in about 14 years the city has a new mayor.

Restaurant owner Tommy Ghboun was happy to hear that there will be several new faces on Pensacola's City Council.

Tommy Ghboun/Jordan Valley Restaurant Owner: "I think it's a great thing as long as you know they take care of the economy and all."

In one election cycle the city got a new mayor... And 4 new council members... Three of whom are women.

Customer Austin Holt thinks he knows why.

Austin Holt/Pensacola Voter: "A lot more people were drawn out for this election because of Obama. I think a lot more young, a lot more I don't want to say open minded but a lot more free thinking individuals come out there who are really capable of looking at the issues that we have."

Newly elected Council Member Diane Mack has her own theory.

Dian Mack/Council Member Elect: "I suppose I would put it this way. There was a group of good old boys who didn't do the job the voters wanted them to do and it's time for the women to take a turn."

One major change could come quickly... Many of the newly elected are interested in re-writing Pensacola's form of government and looking for ways to cut spending.

Larry Johnson/Newly Elected Councilman: "I think there's going to be an effort to consolidate and unify some services and I would like to see our environmental services consolidated with the county."

Ghboun says he hopes that savings equates to more tax cuts...

Tommy Ghboun/Jordan Valley Restaurant Owner: "The more money they give a break for people, the more money they're going to have to spend."

Whatever change is coming will have to take place quickly... Voters decide on the entire council and mayor every 2 years.

The new council will be sworn in monday, january 12th.Shakeup At Pensacola City Council
