ESCAMBIA COUNTY - Those chilly temperatures always brings an increases the threat of house fires.

Escambia and Santa Rosa County fire departments and the City of Pensacola have joined forces to promote fire safety during the month of December...

Escambia County's "Keep the Wreath Green" program and Santa Rosa Counties "Keep your Holidays Bright" campaign both started today.

Fire officials will keep track of fires by noting them on a safety tree and wreath.

Lieutenant, Daniel Akerman says there are simple safety tips, we can practice to ensure this holiday season is a safe one.

"Typically, this time of year with the cold weather our biggest mistakes are using space heating and not turning them off when you leave the room or leave the house or putting them too close to something combustible."

Lieutenant Akerman also reminds us to be cautious when burning candles...

Last year, there were 11 red bulbs on Escambia's wreath.
In Santa Rosa County, firefighters responded to nine fires.Holiday Fire Safety Tips
