OKALOOSA COUNTY - Those who knew Judge Barron well say he was not only a consummate professional but a caring person as well.

There was a mood of sadness and quiet reflection at the courthouse annex today... Where many say the reality of Judge Barron's death hasn't quite sunk in yet.

Just about everyone who worked with Judge Barron had the same reaction to his sudden death.

Disbelief, disappointment, sadness.

It's been devastating, people have just stood around in shock. You'll see everyone hugging each other and crying.

This annex opened in 1976... And Judge Barron was a fixture on the bench here ever since January of 1979.

Those who worked with him on a daily basis all praised his judicial expertise and attention to detail.

His knowledge of the rules of evidence and his ability to conduct a trial were excellent. It was always a pleasure to me to try cases in front of him.

I think I've said in the past, that if I ever were to end up in court, I'd want to be in his court, because I felt like he would weigh all the evidence and would have given a fair decision on whatever was going on.

The judge was known to handle heavy dockets very efficiently.

In fact, he had 10 hearings scheduled for this morning alone.

But, his peers will best remember him for his compassion and his willingness to help others.

He was always very easy to work with.... very, very helpful. Great deal of knowledge and experience, and always willing to share it.

He cared about our well-being, he checked on us when we were out sick. He cared about our families, he remembered our pets. And he was just a generally warm, nice person.

Judge Barron is survived by his wife, and three children.
