DAUPHIN ISLAND - FEMA has announced they will not fund the rebuilding of a protective berm along the West end of Dauphin Island.

According to the FEMA Disaster Coordinator for Alabama, the island doesn't have enough beachfront left to recreate the berm, which was destroyed during Hurricane Gustav.

The 10-foot-high berm was built last year for three-point-six million dollars along three miles of Gulf beachfront to protect scores of resort homes.

FEMA estimates rebuilding it again would cost $4 million.

Town officials have until January 10 to appeal the decision. Town officials haven't decided whether to appeal yet. FEMA Will Not Fund Rebuilding of Dauphin Island Berm
