Droogsma one of nation's best throwers
Austin Droogsma was a standout offensive lineman at Gulf Breeze and had division one football offers. He chose instead to pursue throwing at Florida State, and it's proven to be a good decision.
Droogsma was best known for football in high school, but he did so much more. In addition to winning state in discus and shot put, he also played baseball and wrestled.
That's rare diversity for a college thrower, and it's served him well. A steady climb has reached an elite level.
Droogsma won the ACC indoor championship in shot put and owns the nation’s fourth-best throw heading into the National Championship Meet this week. As a senior, he's found a way to push through to a new level.
Droogsma has also been FSU's track team captain for almost two years. He leads the Seminoles "rock" chant before big meets.
The significance of that within this program is huge. After the Indoor Championships, Droogsma still has the outdoor season to go for his senior year, but his throwing career probably doesn't end there.
Turning pro and trying for the Olympics are all on the table. The next step, trying to win a national title in the Indoor Championship Meet at Texas A&M.
The shot put finals are Friday evening.
