UWF Softball Preps for NCAA Super Regional

It has been 14 years since a UWF softball team qualified for the NCAA Division 2 College World Series. The current Argos are two wins away.

UWF hosts Gulf South Conference rival, Lee, in the NCAA Super-Regional, Thursday and Friday.

This is new turf for these Argos, the Super-Regional. It just doesn't feel that way. Or look that way,.

Tiona Hill's walk-off single drove in the tying and winning runs in the Regional. The moment wasn't too big, for her, or for any Argo.

"Everyone's playing their role in the line-up," said Hill. "So it makes it much easier. And I think, as the season's gone on, we've all trusted each other more. So, there's really not a lot of pressure on me to perform."

Senior catcher, Caitlin Steel added, "When T came up, we knew someone was bound to get those runs in. There was no doubt in any of our minds that we were going to win that game."

The Argos have shown a flair for big-time, game-saving plays this post-season. At some point, you almost expect it.

But Hill demurs. "We're not expecting it. We're pumped when it happens. But we do put the work in, so, when it happens, we're not surprised."

Argos' third-year head coach Melissa Paul said she hopes her players aren't surprised when they make big plays. "We haven't had many, this season. Not a lot of walk-off victories or really tight games at the end. So, it's nice to see we can do that," Paul said.

The Super Regional is not familiar. But the opponent is, conference rival Lee. The argos swept three games from the Lady Flames less than three weeks ago. But that could be a dangerous memory.

Paul cautioned, "They're a very good ballclub. They can pitch. They can hit. They can run. They can play good defense. And so, Valdosta [who UWF swept in the Regional] got us three times in the regular season. So we have to remember that or we'll be reminded of that, the hard way."

And the Argos' approach this weekend is the same as any weekend. Play their game.

Steel explained, "We never need to try to be too big. Never play down to people. Just play our game. Coach talks about it all the time. Stay within yourself. And do what you need to do to get the job done on the field. And pass on to your next teammate to get the job done."

The Super Regional is a best-of-three series. The Argos host Lee in Game One, Thursday at 4:00. Game(s) Two (and Three, if necessary), are scheduled for Friday afternoon.
