Boston on high alert as authorities investigate marathon bombing

BOSTON, Mas. -- A federal, state and local investigation is underway in Boston tonight
After back to back bombings at the Boston Marathon.
Three people were killed and at least 141 wounded,  many seriously.

Boston is a city on high alert.

ABC's Marci Gonzalez joins us now live again from Boston.

Good evening Marci.


The first explosion went off at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, four hours into the race.
Seconds later, another explosion nearby.

 Runner: "I literally saw the garbage barrel explode and I saw the flash the
 fire the explosion and I just ran as fast as I could."

Complete chaos followed. Smoke filled the air. Debris and blood covered the streets with injured people everywhere
Frightened  people ran for cover.

Ed Davis "This cowardly act will not be taken in stride, we will turn every rock over."

Police and emergency crews scrambled to attend to the wounded. Many were transported from the scene in wheelchairs and on stretchers.

"I saw one guy with his legs gone at the knees, ankles and feet missing, shrapnel wounds on people on the sides of the head and other things."

The FBI is taking the lead on the joint investigation to find out who is responsible for this carnage.

No suspect is in custody.

The Boston Marathon is one of the premiere races in the country.
Security is being ramped up throughout the city., and the mayor is asking the public to be on alert
