Shalimar construction project completed
SHALIMAR -- SHALIMAR -- Drivers and businesses along Eglin Parkway in Shalimar have something to smile about.
After months of dealing with messy construction, traffic is running smoothly along State Road 85 between Eglin and Fort Walton Beach.
The construction project began last year.
Workers still have paving to do, but the barricades have been removed.
The majority of the construction dealt with drainage issues. But now that's completed, and there's no more confusion.
It's the busiest Peppers Mexican Cantina has been in awhile. When construction started on Eglin Parkway last year-businesses along this stretch were suffering, but now business owners have something to cheer about.
"Right now we're pretty busy. We're not having any problems anymore, like there's a lot of traffic here right now"
Peppers opened its doors last year. At first, the restaurant was busy, but as it became more difficult for people to drive into the parking lot, business started hurting.
"It was too much to deal with and stuff like that"
It was the same scenario at Rocco's Sub Shop. The crowd here usually consists of people working on base-but with the messy construction, hardly anyone was walking in.
"We had to put an ad in the paper through the back way"
It's only been a few days since the barricades were removed but there's been a huge improvement.
"We are already above what we would normally do all day"
Even though things are moving, construction isn't expected to be completed until this fall.
