Collecting sales tax on online purchases

The senate is expected to vote and pass a long debated  bill today making it easier for states to collect sales tax on online purchases.  

Under current law, online sellers are only required to collect tax in states where they have a physical presence.
    
If the online retailer doesn't collect the tax, it's up to you to pay.
But, no one really does and there's not much states can do about it.   
    
Some large retailers are happy about the news, but many small business owners worry they'll be swamped by new requirements from faraway states.
