Gulf Power scam phone calls

Gulf Power is warning customers about a scam.

People claiming to be from the company have been calling customers ,threatening to cut off their service and asking for their credit card numbers.

Gulf Power says its employees will never call you asking for your personal information, including your credit card numbers.
But that's just what these crooks are doing.
The company says more than 30 customers have reported getting phone calls from the scammers since May in locations throughout Northwest Florida.
They say at least one person has fallen victim to the scheme, giving out their personal information.

But so far most people who've been called are like Bill Marshall, the owner of Krystylz Hair Salon on Pace Boulevard in Escambia County.
Marshall says the scammers contacted him Monday afternoon and he knew right away something was wrong.

Bill Marshall, Spoke with Scammers: "They said we was behind on our payment for Gulf Power and we'd be disconnected at 4:00 o'clock. But I know I'd paid my bill maybe three days before so I knew my bill wasn't due. And the guy kept being persistent saying, 'Go ahead just give us the credit card."

I called the phone number Marshall and others say the suspects have been using and I heard a recording of a male voice with a possible middle-eastern accent saying I'd reached Gulf Power.

If you have any information about the scam or if you've fallen victim to one of these schemes, you're asked to contact law enforcement immediately and call Gulf Power at 1-800-225-5797.
