New Details: Deadly crash on Mobile Highway

The crash happened around 5:30 Saturday evening on Mobile Highway near Glidden Lane.

Investigators say 22 year-old Daniel Howard was killed when his SUV collided with an oncoming car. They say Howard was driving eastbound when he tried to pass a vehicle and lost control.

A bumper is still left behind there at the crash scene where witnesses say it looked like the two vehicles disintegrated.

You can see an iPod is left behind along with plenty of other debris and in the woods there are burnt up branches and tree limbs.

Bill Davis, who lives near crash scene said, " We heard a thump. Or a bump."

People who live nearby say it sounded like an explosion.

Another neighbor said, "I was very nervous.  I was actually sitting down eating a salad. And when I saw it I jumped up and my salad went all over the floor."

Mr. Davis continued, "He was tryin' to get the people out of the vehicles.  And one of the vehicles was on fire."

Neighbors say people in the area immediately tried to help the crash victims, whose vehicles had come to rest on the side of the road.
The front of the Volkswagen was obliterated and the SUV, now in the woods, had started burning.

The neighbors attempted to put out the fire with garden hoses.
Firefighters and other first responders then showed up and Daniel Howard was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and passenger of the Volkswagen, Teresa Hart and Daren Coats, were taken to Sacred Heart Hospital with serious injuries.

For now the accident remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
