High school graduation costs

ESCAMBIA COUNTY   --  High school graduations are finished in Escambia County.

But some parents and family members wonder why the Escambia County School District pays to have the ceremony at the Pensacola Bay Center.

Some people say they'd rather see money be saved and the ceremonies be held in a cheaper location like a football stadium.

More than a thousand high school seniors participated in their graduation over the last two days here at the Bay Center. So how much did that cost the school district?  We learned it was a little more than 27,000 dollars.

But is having a graduation ceremony at a football stadium really that much cheaper?  Carolyn Spooner is the director of high school education says not necessarily.

"When we have it in a stadium you still have to rent risers, rent chairs, you have to rent a sound system, you have to bring in medical personal, and security . It's not all free just because we have it at the school."

Spooner says there are also several other reasons why the school district holds graduation ceremonies at the Pensacola Bay Center.

"We can't control the weather. We can control the performance at the Bay Center. If we don't have rain, it's still very hot this time of year so that's difficult to have a ceremony this IMPORTANT where students are concluding their high school education."

The school district says they decided to move graduation ceremonies indoors during the 80's.
