Two injured in Destin jet ski accident
DESTIN -- A sixty-year-old man and a twelve-year-old boy were taken to the hospital after their jet ski crashed into the Destin bridge this morning.
Laura Hussey "This is the jet ski that was involved in the accident. Look at this damage, all to the front of the ski, indicating a head-on collision"
Families like the beach next to the Destin bridge. It's usually quiet, but not this time.
John Craft/Birmingham "We saw the Marine police, flying through the water, headed that direction"
Shane Wiley works here every day. It was a strange sight for him too.
Shane "The MP walked down here and we're like hey what happened, have you heard anything on the radio? And he was like yeah, we think a personal watercraft hit the bridge, which is like a jet ski"
The Coast Guard says two people were riding on the ski a 60-year-old man and a 12-year-old boy.
The child was unconscious when he was pulled from the water by a boater, but came to as he was being taken to shore.
John "One of 'em came back flying, obviously had some pedestrians in the back of the boat"
The adult was conscious when he was rescued.
Both were taken to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.
The fire chief says the jet ski crashed into a bridge piling.
It's too early to know what led to the accident, but Shane Wiley says a lot of jet skis go too fast.
Shane Wiley/Blue Lagoon Watersports "I don't know. I think maybe they should extend the no-wake signs because everybody speeds through here. There's just too much traffic because of Crab Island over there"
John "It makes you think twice, it really does. It makes you think to be a little more conscious of safety"
Laura Hussey "The Destin Fire Control District, the Coast Guard and the Fish and Wildlife Commission were all on the scene within minutes."
