Safes containing ballots for special election stolen from satellite office

MIDWAY   --  Meanwhile Santa Rosa County deputies are investigating a theft that could* affect the results of that special election.

A thief or thieves stole two safes from the Escambia County Elections satellite office in Midway the over the weekend.

Elections officials discovered the safes missing this morning.
In it, were several early election ballots.

What election officials are doing to make sure those votes get counted
There were 35 of these ballots in those stolen safes.  They were absentee ballots and early voting ballots cast on Friday and Saturday

One day before the special election...
Deputies are trying to find out if someone's out to steal votes - literally*.
Investigators think the thieves came in and out of this side door and walked here behind the voter registration desk.

When employees closed up at 4 p.m. on Saturday, they say there were two safes here. Whether the thieves were after the ballots is the big question.

If they were going for safes in here, they figured there was some cash in here.

Election officials say the safes only locked up ballots. 2 absentees in one safe, 33 early votes in the other.

Elections supervisor say they know who voted just not who they voted for.
They've gotten a hold to the two absentee votes, they're working to call the early voters

I think we're just confident that we can reach out to these 33 voters. We want to make sure we're doing everything we can to make sure these votes count.

Both candidates say it's concerning.
But are awaiting results of the investigation.
Bob Crochie plans to vote in tomorrow's special election and says it the election process didn't need this.

35 shouldn't make that much different, but you never know, there have been elections won by less than 35

Aside from theft and burglary charges, deputies say the thieves could be facing additional charges because of the contents of those safes.
