Lifeguards use jet skis, rescues are faster

DESTIN -- Lifeguards in Destin are using a jet ski to get to swimmers in trouble…quicker. The Destin Fire Control district decided to let lifeguards patrol Destin’s east pass on a jet ski, after three people drowned near that area in 2011 and 2012. They've been using the personal watercraft since Memorial day. So far, they've already made 20 rescues.
"What we're trying to do is some prevention and some .... Even ten minutes too late."
It costs the Destin Fire Control District nearly $35,000 to put a lifeguard with a personal watercraft at the pass. The district's beach safety budget for this year is $592,000.
