(ABC) Kids and Sports injuries

When we send our kids out to play sports, we expect a skinned knee, maybe a bruise or two.
But more and more kids report more grown-up injuries, from knee problems to concussion.

Parents and coaches are trying to get a good idea of how often kids are getting hurt and why.

Every three minutes.  That's how often a child is seen in an emergency room for a concussion from sports.  Broaden the category of injuries wider -- to
knee problems, sprains, breaks, and more, and that number of kids sent to hospitals in 2012 is 1.35 million. That's according to "Safe Kids Worldwide", using data from the US Consumer Safety Commission.

Of course, the health benefits from sports activities for children can be enormous -- not only on lifelong physical abilities, but for social skills and teamwork.  But this is the first time this kind of injury data has been reported on a nationwide scale, surprisingly about half of the concussions happened to athletes between 12 and 15 years old.  This as teams across the country consider new ways to keep sports injuries from happening -- and to keep players off the field after concussions injuries.

In short; we always need to remember that the kids who get seriously hurt can suffer real loss.
