School starts in Escambia , Santa Rosa and Okaloosa Counties

LOCAL COUNTIES   --  Today is the first day of school and safety is a must, that's why there's a community concern. Crossing guards are back and armed with their stop signs. a few firefighters even made an appearance at A.K. Suter Elementary to help direct traffic.

The drop off line is long. Parents say the first day is always the hardest. "It's tough after a long summer of sleeping in. To get up and head to school" says Kevin Thomas.

But the children are excited ready for: "Math" says William Thomas. "The teachers and the yard" says Desmond Mouton. His sister also likes the playground.  "What I most like is recess" says Candance Mouton.

Favorite subjects a side, the Superintendent says more focus will be placed on students attendance this year and eliminating tardiness. And while the students travel to school each day, traffic officers suggest you look to your right first when approaching an intersection. Pedestrians and bike riders will be stepping off that curb first. Take the time to slow down and check your surroundings, that way everyone can have a safe school year.
