Man shot on couch says he doesn't know who shot him

ESCAMBIA COUNTY - The Escambia County Sheriff's Office is investigating a mysterious shooting that happened early Tuesday morning in the Mayfair area.

Just after midnight, a man was shot while sitting on a couch at the Sunrise Apartments on Fairfield Drive.

The 24 year-old victim told deputies he has no idea who shot him. And investigators say he isn't saying much more than that.

The man was shot just feet from a neighboring apartment where a mother and her two year-old son were sleeping.

Reporter Joe Douglass asked the mother, who chose to remain anonymous, What went through your mind as soon as you heard that and woke up?"

"Making sure my child was all right, She said, I feel terrified because, I mean, it come out of nowhere. It just needs to be better than what it is, for one."

The victim says he was sitting on a couch in a ground floor apartment when he was hit.

I did hear bullet shots, the mother said, I thought it was firecrackers at first."

When deputies arrived at the scene, they scoured the complex, placing several numbered placards around the courtyard in front of the apartment to mark evidence.

The victim was taken to Baptist Hospital as a trauma alert, but deputies say his wounds did not appear to be life-threatening.

Gemika Edwards, who lives just around the corner from the apartment complex, said, It's really scary."

Edwards says she's afraid to let her children leave her property.

With my kids staying here and me being here, who knows, stray bullet, anything, Edwards said, The kids can get hurt, anyone can get hurt just by unnecessary nonsense."

At this point there no reports of any arrests.

If you have any information that can help investigators, you're urged to call Gulf Coast Crime Stoppers at 850-433-STOP.
