Florida back-over crashes over 200 a year
More than 200 people are killed in back-over crashes every year. According to the Department of Transportation, half of them are children under the age of five.
The DOT is recommending all new vehicles have rear view cameras. Three safety and consumer groups say a recommendation is not enough and are suing the DOT to make the cameras a requirement.
In 2008, Congress told the DOT rear view cameras should be required for all new vehicles by 2011. Five years later, no regulation is in place.
The lawsuit asks the court to direct the DOT to have a rear view camera requirement in place in 90 days.
